Job description
Full Time / 37 Hours Per Week / 12 Month Fixed Term due to backfilling secondment

Make a difference to the citizens of Leicester and their health and wellbeing,

Join us to deliver on a secondary care treatment programme for tobacco addiction. As a valued member of our local authority Stop Smoking Services team, you'll work on this exciting programme for smokers across University Hospitals Leicester. Working with the Service Lead, community and hospital-based midwives and maternity support workers, we aim to provide Stop Smoking support to pregnant women to promote smoke free pregnancies and smoke free homes.

This is a full-time, 12-month fixed term position working 37 hours per week. You'll be able to work flexibly, including evenings and weekends by agreement, to provide sessions to meet service user needs. You'll work across two sites - Leicester Royal Infirmary and Leicester General Hospital.

We will consider this vacancy on a secondment basis for Leicester City Council employees. If you wish to apply for this post on a secondment basis then please make your line manager aware before applying.

What you'll be doing

Working predominantly in hospital wards and clinics within maternity services, you'll also counsel pregnant women on stopping smoking from the community. You'll manage a caseload of clients and monitor their progress, as well as make further referrals to other services to support clients to enhance their health and wellbeing. This will include planning and delivering treatment sessions, using motivational interviewing techniques and providing clients with tools to help them with stopping smoking during their pregnancy and the post-natal period. You'll work closely with Public Health midwife, Service Lead and stop smoking services to develop, inform, and implement strategies to ensure health professionals are adequately trained to support women and their families with health improvement measures.

What you'll need

With previous experience of supporting individuals to change their behaviour and helping them to facilitate these changes, you will understand the national and local agenda in relation to smoking cessation and tobacco and the impact of smoking on an individual's health. Using your excellent verbal, written communication, and interpersonal skills you will have the ability to listen actively and provide clear explanations and clinical advice to clients and other professionals as well as ability to engage, influence and persuade others.

You will have completed the NCSCT (National Centre for Smoking Cessation & Training) Knowledge and Skills programme OR be able to complete this within 1 month of commencement in the post.

You will have completed the NCSCT (National Centre for Smoking Cessation & Training) Standard Treatment Programme for Pregnant Women programme OR be able to complete this within 1 month of commencement in the post.

What we can offer you

As well as the satisfaction of helping to improve thousands of lives across Leicester, you can look forward to a work environment that encourages a healthy work/life balance. You'll enjoy generous annual leave, membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme and the option of flexible working. We'll also give you the chance to develop your skills and expertise with a variety of training and development opportunities.
