Our Commercial & Industrial division designs, fabricates and constructs structural steelwork for a variety of different sectors including commercial offices, stadia & leisure, industrial & distribution, data centres, retail and health and education.
The division has manufacturing sites in three locations: Dalton, Lostock, and Enniskillen. Each has full-service capabilities and modern manufacturing processes enabling us to provide a high-quality product to a variety of different sectors. Vacancy Details
In the Structural Fire Engineer position, you'll play a key role in developing and implementing passive fire protection strategies for our steelwork projects. You'll be the go-to expert on intumescent paint systems, steel limiting temperatures, and fire resistance design--ensuring our structures remain safe and compliant under fire exposure.
Other responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
Develop and review fire protection strategies in line with UK and international codes.
Perform fire engineering calculations to determine steel limiting temperatures and fire resistance periods.
Specify and assess intumescent paint systems, including DFT requirements based on section factor and exposure.
Prepare and review technical fire resistance reports and submissions.
Collaborate with architects, engineers, and contractors to integrate fire protection into project designs.
Support tendering, procurement, and installation of passive fire protection systems.
Conduct site inspections to verify correct application of coatings.
Liaise with testing agencies and suppliers regarding fire test data and certifications.
Key Skills & experience
The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in passive fire protection and structural fire design. The ideal candidate will bring technical expertise, industry knowledge, and practical experience to support Severfield's high-profile steelwork projects.
You'll need:
Significant experience in fire engineering, focusing on structural steel and intumescent coatings
A degree in Structural or Fire Safety Engineering (Master's preferred); chartership (e.g., CEng, IFE, SFPE) is a plus but not essential.
Proficiency in fire resistance design, DFT calculations, and relevant codes (Eurocodes, BS 5950 Part 8, EN 1993-1-2)
Familiarity with fire engineering tools (e.g., Ozone, SAFIR, Vulcan)
Strong analytical, reporting, and communication skills
