We are currently looking for a Structures Engineer in Derby, United Kingdom.

Your mission:

As a Structures Engineer, you will work as part of the Structures team on both new design projects and the assessment of existing products. The Structure Engineer\'s primary role is to undertake structural assessments (using both manual and Finite Element methods) on rail vehicle car bodies. The role will not only include carrying out structural analysis but also the development of the designs to meet the structural and functional requirements of the products. The role will include deriving load cases, FE model setup, conducting the analysis, evaluating the results, modifying designs, and writing the reports, as well as communicating the progress and results to the Project team.

You would be working as part of a global network of structural engineers who work closely together on multi-national projects. This is a role that will involve not only Derby-based projects but also projects based in other Bombardier sites.

Your responsibilities:

  • Managing the calculation discipline with activities and deliverables in compliance with QCD commitments.
  • Planning and piloting Mechanical calculation activities and related deliverables on project taking into account applicable instructions/processes and other specific Customer (internal or external) requirements.
  • Ensuring Mechanical calculation deliverables quality and their acceptance by the Customer (internal or external) within committed limits.
  • Checking availability on time of work package input data and escalating if necessary.
  • Checking supplier\'s and sub-contractor\'s conformity to calculation.
  • Finite Element Calculations, Linear and non-linear
  • General Mechanical Engineering design and problem solving
  • Writing reports & presiding over Test programs
  • Evaluating supplier calculations & test results
  • Managing work undertaken by other BT sites and sub-contractors.
  • Work within the allocated budget & schedule.
  • Planning and piloting calculation discipline activities and related deliverables on project taking into account applicable instructions/processes and other specific Customer (internal or external) requirements.
  • Applying calculation methodologies, processes, and tools to ensure deliverables quality and their acceptance by the Customer (internal or external) within committed limits.
  • Suggesting design improvements (reinforcement or simplifications) of calculated parts..
  • Defining mitigation plans covering a risk identified on Project Mechanical (multi-domains).
  • Performing quotation of the engineering work package, upon request.
Your experience and qualifications :
  • Bachelor or Master\'s degree in Mechanical Engineering preferably applied to Railway products with 3 to 5 years of experience.
  • Experience of Finite Element analysis packages, such as Hyperworks, Ansys, Patran/Nastran, Ideas, and Abacus, including both linear and non-linear assessments.
  • Previous experience in using CAD packages such as CATIA, and Pro Engineer is desirable
  • Understanding of Structural Mechanics and the fundamentals of Fatigue assessment methods
  • Demonstrable practical experience in Mechanical Engineering outside of the role of structural mechanics, such as design, dynamics, testing is desirable
  • A results-driven individual with good flexibility.
  • Proactive and ability to define and manage priorities within deadlines
  • Problem-solving, Communication, and interpersonal skills including with third parties (customers).
  • Time management and reporting skills.
  • English operational in reading/writing and technical meetings.
