Introduction

As the research and analysis division of the Economist Group, EIU helps leaders to prepare for opportunity, empowering them to act with confidence when making strategic decisions. EIU is the global standard in providing high-quality, actionable intelligence to the public and private sectors, assessing issues that affect the marketplace for more than 200 countries.

We are recruiting a highly efficient and organised Sub Editor to work within the Country Analysis division. They will work on a broad portfolio of reports and events-driven articles, in close collaboration with and reporting to the Senior Sub Editor.

Accountabilities

  • Perform on-screen sub editing in compliance with house style. This includes checking grammar, punctuation, spelling, syntax and tone
  • Ensure the quality, accuracy and consistency of all content, and that it is fit for purpose
  • Resolve ambiguous passages in conjunction with the editors
  • Handle text, tables and charts within a custom-built template
  • Send copy for final publication both through the template and through the content management system
  • Assist other regional sub editors when uneven workflow arises
  • Attend regional and sub edit meetings
Experience, skills and professional attributes

The ideal skills for this role are:
  • A degree or equivalent (ideally in English or Modern Languages, Political Science, Politics, Economics or International Relations or related subject)
  • Relevant work experience in a Sub Editor role
  • International commercial exposure within a publishing environment
  • Knowledge of custom-built templates (intermediate Word skills) and CMSs
  • An interest in, or basic understanding of, macroeconomic analysis, politics and international affairs
  • Knowledge of and interest in Latin America would be an advantage
  • A good command of the English language and, preferably, written Spanish
  • An ability to work to tight deadlines, turning around high volumes of output under pressure and to a high standard
  • An ability to assess the level of sub editing needed for each report
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills
