The Opportunity:
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented
Substation Design Engineer
to join our dynamic Transmission & Distribution team. In this role, you will be responsible for the electrical and physical design of high-voltage and medium-voltage substations from conception through construction. You will work alongside a talented team to develop safe, reliable, and cost-effective design solutions that meet client and industry standards. This is a fantastic opportunity to apply your technical skills to critical infrastructure projects and grow your career in the energy sector.
Key Responsibilities
As a key member of our Transmission & Distribution team, you will take ownership of the HV plant and primary electrical design for critical substation infrastructure projects. Your expertise will guide projects from conception to completion, ensuring the delivery of safe, compliant, and state-of-the-art solutions for our major clients.
Your core responsibilities will include:
HV Plant & Primary Design Leadership: Lead the development and delivery of primary electrical designs for both new-build (Air and GasInsulated Switchgear - AIS/GIS) and brownfield substation projects, with a focus on voltages up to and including 400kV.
End-to-End Project Execution: Manage the entire design lifecycle, from initial concept and Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) through to detailed design for construction, for projects such as transformer replacements, shunt reactor installations, and new bay construction.
Technical Specification & Procurement: Prepare comprehensive technical specifications for major electrical plant equipment (e.g., power transformers, circuit breakers, disconnectors) and provide technical assessment of tender submissions.
Multi-Disciplinary Integration: Serve as the primary interface for technical coordination, collaborating closely with Civil/Structural, Protection & Control, HV Cable, and Overhead Line engineers to deliver fully integrated and optimized project solutions.
Client & Stakeholder Management: Act as a key technical point of contact, building and maintaining strong, trust-based relationships with clients (including National Grid, SSEN, and others), contractors, and internal project teams.
Safety & Compliance: Champion a safety-first culture by leading Health and Safety risk identification (HAZID) and ensuring that safety-by-design principles are embedded in all aspects of the project.
Quality & Contractual Assurance: Uphold a rigorous quality assurance process, guaranteeing that all designs are delivered in full compliance with client specifications, contractual obligations, and relevant industry standards.
Team Development & Mentorship: Contribute to the growth and capability of the design team by mentoring junior engineers, providing technical guidance, and assisting with resource planning to ensure successful project delivery.
What You'll Bring:
A degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with a relevant institution (e.g., IET), or demonstrable progress and commitment to achieving chartered status in the near future.
Significant, relevant professional experience in the design of High Voltage (HV) substations, with a proven portfolio of projects at transmission voltages up to and including 400kV.
A strong track record of delivering complex, multi-disciplinary engineering projects within the Transmission & Distribution sector.
Demonstrable experience preparing a full suite of design deliverables, including detailed design calculations, technical reports, and construction drawings.
Familiarity with UK grid codes and utility standards (e.g., National Grid, DNOs).
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
Full, clean UK driving license is important, as the role will involve travel to various sites.
Flexibility and willingness to relocate to different parts of the UK as project requirements dictate.
Additional Advantageous Experience: A strong advantage would be experience with any of the following: proficiency with CAD software (AutoCAD, MicroStation) for design review; knowledge of LV AC/DC auxiliary power systems; direct project experience for major clients such as National Grid or SSEN; and familiarity with both Air Insulated (AIS) and Gas Insulated (GIS) substation projects.
