We are currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join a premier team of Supervisory Firefighters at the Royal Air Force (RAF) Menwith Hill, United Kingdom.
What will be your primary role?
The primary purpose of this position is to serve as Assistant Chief of Operations in charge of the management and control one of two alternating 24-hour shifts, supervising all firefighters in fire ground situations as well as the performance of care and maintenance of apparatus and equipment. As an Assistant Chief of Operations on a 24-hour duty shift, you will participate in the administration and planning of a comprehensive fire prevention, firefighting and rescue program for the installation. You will serve as the on-scene commander of a fire/crash scene until relieved by the Fire Chief or Deputy Fire Chief and supervise fire alarm communication center operations to ensure all firefighting equipment and personnel are dispatched as required. In addition, you will perform supervisory personnel management responsibilities and advise and provide counsel to employees regarding policies, procedures, and directives of management. This is a Mission Essential (ME) position performing a Mission Critical Function (MCF) which must continue uninterrupted after the occurrence of an emergency and continue through full resumption of all functions.

You must be certified, or become certified within two years, by the DoD Firefighter Certification system as a Fire Officer III, Fire Instructor II, Fire Inspector II, Hazardous Materials Incident Commander, HAZMAT Operations with Mission Specific Competencies Personal Protective Equipment and Product Control (includes HAZMAT Awareness), Incident Safety Officer, and Health/Safety officer.

What are the Key Skills required for this role?
1. Knowledge of the theory, principles, methods, techniques, and practices of firefighting and rescue operations.
2. Knowledge of the operation of fire department communications equipment.
3. Ability to operate and direct others in operating under stressful and dangerous conditions.
4. Ability to formulate and effectively implement firefighting/emergency response plans and to direct personnel in such operations.
5. Ability to plan, organize, and direct functions and to mentor, motivate, and appraise the staff of an organization.
6. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
7. The work requires you to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver's license is required. You must have a UK Driving License complete with LGV Category C.
What are the conditions of employment for this role?
1. You will be required to handle and safeguard sensitive information in accordance with applicable US and UK laws, rules and regulations.
2. You may be required to travel by military and/or civilian aircraft, and you may also be required to travel to the US or other country, in the performance of official duties or attend necessary training.
3. You will be required to complete a 12-month probationary period.
4. Overtime may be required, and you may be assigned other duties not included in this position description, but that are appropriate to the grade and skill set of the incumbent.
5. You must obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance (DV + STRAP)
6. This position requires you to work under adverse environmental conditions and falls under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program. Duties may require wearing of firefighting personal protective equipment with Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and entering environments designated as immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH).
7. You must have attended or be willing to attend Air Force Incident Commanders Course and National Incident Management 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800 (or Air Force approved equivalent).
8. You must maintain current Emergency Medical Responder and CPR certification.
9. This position may be considered operational; when working an operational work schedule you are entitled to receive an Operational Firefighter Pay Supplement for working an approved USAFE shift pattern. The shift pattern may total 192 hours over a 4-week period. Work schedules may be subject to change depending on the operational needs of the organization as dictated by management.
10. Special Retirement Provisions Authority: This is a Secondary operations position; UK retirement rules apply.
11. You will be subject to recall in the event of real fire/disaster emergencies. You may also be required to take part in test alerts and practice readiness exercises.
12. You are required to participate in a physical fitness program and pass an annual physical.
13. Pre-Appointment and annual physical/health screening is required. Appointment may be contingent upon passing a physical examination. Physical demands include heavy lifting, walking, crawling, kneeling, rapid mental and muscular coordination, climbing, and is required to maintain physical fitness requirements necessary to perform the job.
14. Work environment may include outside work and inside work, excessive heat and cold, dust, smoke, water, fumes, slippery or uneven walking surfaces, above or below ground, and irregular hours of work, i.e. day and/or night.
15. The Local National Direct Hire (LNDH) Program does not participate in regular drug testing; however, positions covered by this document may be subject to drug testing upon reasonable suspicion of substance abuse, and safety mishap or accident testing.
