Role Purpose
To provide high-quality, person-centred support to individuals with learning disabilities, helping them develop independence, access the community, and improve their quality of life. The Support Worker promotes dignity, choice, and inclusion in all aspects of daily living.
Key Responsibilities
1. Personal Care & Daily Living
Support individuals with personal care tasks, such as washing, dressing, and toileting (where required).
Assist with preparing meals, household tasks, cleaning, and maintaining a safe environment.
Support individuals to manage their own health and wellbeing, including medication (following training and policies).
2. Promoting Independence
Encourage service users to make their own choices and take an active role in daily activities.
Support with budgeting, shopping, developing life skills, and maintaining routines.
3. Community Participation
Assist individuals to access community resources such as leisure centres, day services, education, volunteering, and social activities.
Provide transport or accompany individuals using public or private vehicles.
4. Communication & Behaviour Support
Use appropriate communication methods (Makaton, PECS, communication aids, etc.) depending on individual needs.
Follow behaviour support plans to safely manage behaviours that challenge, using positive behaviour support (PBS) techniques.
5. Safeguarding & Record Keeping
Promote and maintain the safety, rights, and wellbeing of service users at all times.
Report safeguarding concerns in line with policy.
Keep accurate records, including care notes, incident reports, and support plans.
6. Teamwork & Professional Practice
Work collaboratively with families, professionals, and colleagues.
Attend training, team meetings, and supervision.
Maintain confidentiality and uphold professional standards.

Experience & Qualifications
Desired (but not always essential):
Experience working with people with learning disabilities or in a care/support setting
NVQ/QCF Level 2 or 3 in Health and Social Care (or willingness to work towards it)
Training in safeguarding, medication, first aid, or PBS (can be provided)
Previous experience in mental health, eating disorder, or acute hospital settings
Previous experience managing challenging behaviour
Experience with 1:1 observations / specialising / bed watch
Experience supporting individuals with anorexia, bulimia, ARFID, or disordered eating
Applicants must be willing and able to work in environments where restrictive interventions may be required as a last resort
Prior training in PMVA / MAPA / CPI / TCI is highly desirable
Understanding of least restrictive practice, safeguarding, and accompanying legal frameworks
Additional Requirements
Flexibility to work shifts including weekends and holidays
Enhanced DBS check
Valid driving licence (depending on service needs)
