Requirements of a Support Worker
A caring attitude
Good listening and communication skills
The ability to understand and follow policies and procedures
Good writing skills to fill in documentation
Experience of working with service users aged 16 - 25 with emotional and behavioural difficulties, learning difficulties and mental health challenges
Experience supporting vulnerable people
Minimum Level 3 in Children & Young Person qualification (Or willing to work towards achieving this within a specific timeframe)
Committed to a structured approach to training and personal development
Understanding of the Supported Accommodations Regulations, Health & Safety legislation and The Care Act 2014
Strong interpersonal and multi-tasking skills
Character demonstrating honesty, decency and integrity
Conducting themselves and working consistently in a professional and confident manner
Have a caring disposition with a warm empathetic personality
Positive attitude, enthusiasm along with influencing and motivational skills
The ability to cope with and remain calm in very challenging and demanding situations
Resilient, reliable and punctual
Full driving licence preferred, or willing to work towards this
Key Responsibilities
Physical/Emotional/Social Needs of service users
To be familiar with the home's statement of purpose, function and management and to provide a level of support and service that meets Regulatory and Company expectations and standards.
To work within all policies and procedures and to promote these within the staff team.
To contribute to the normal development of the residents, through the provision of a healthy lifestyle, a variety of appropriate activities and a consistent caring adult role model.
To identify and implement boundaries necessary to modify unacceptable behaviour.
To be alert to signs of distress of abuse and ensure that the service users are monitored, supervised and protected. To ensure compliance with all staffing ratios required for individual service users
To be sensitive to the needs of individual service users, taking account of race, language, religion, sexuality and culture.
To be aware of the young person's rights and to work in an anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive manner and in-line with the Company's Equal Opportunities Policy
To liaise regularly and effectively, and develop and maintain good working relationships with Therapy, Education, Social Workers, and other professionals who have a significant role regarding the young person's welfare.
To contribute to and implement support plans, risk assessments and action plans, participate in reviews and other meetings as required and ensure LAC documentation is up to date and changed when appropriate i.e. after a statutory review. Ensure effective case file management is maintained as set out in agreed plans.
Where applicable encourage and support service users to attend educational provisions, and all other appointments and meetings as required including therapy sessions. To ensure any concerns, refusal to attend or feedback is reported to the house manager and social care team.
To ensure that service users facing a particular crisis and stress are offered appropriate additional support and to ensure that staff are supported in dealing with complex situations.
To maintain high standards of support and to be flexible in adapting to meet the young person's needs.
To observe and actively promote communication with staff and senior management, and ensure they are made aware of any serious or potentially serious situations.
Requirements
Previous experience in a caregiving role is preferred, particularly in childcare, senior care, or hospice care settings.
Strong communication skills and the ability to build rapport with clients.
Patience and empathy towards individuals requiring support.
Ability to manage challenging behaviours effectively.
A valid driving licence is preferred.
Flexibility to work various shifts as required by client needs.
Personal Development
To complete QCF training in child care, level 3 or equivalent and show commitment to further training.
To maintain professional knowledge and skills through training, reading and other activities and be responsible for your own continuing professional development plan.
To develop own and colleague's skills in direct work with service users
To maintain DBS update service subscription
