Job summary




We are seeking a dedicated individual to provide effective support to a member of our Casework Team who is deaf.


The team member?s role involves reviewing cases and investigating suspected miscarriages of justice. This includes examining material from the police, prosecution, courts and defence, as well as records from prisons, the NHS and local authorities. They may also interview applicants and witnesses or instruct experts in a range of forensic and scientific disciplines.


Your role will be to provide high-quality notetaking support to enable them to carry out their responsibilities effectively. This will include supporting them during key meetings and training sessions, transcribing audio material such as body-worn camera footage, and being present during some calls.


When not providing direct support, you will assist our Casework Administration team with non-urgent administrative tasks. This may include preparing case documents, updating manuals and procedures, dealing with correspondence, and other routine clerical tasks.


It is essential that your working hours align with those of the individual you will be supporting; therefore, this position is offered as a full-time role only. While we offer flexible working arrangements, the successful candidate will agree a suitable working pattern directly with the person they are supporting to ensure their needs are met.


This role is offered on a fixed-term basis, as the team member you will be supporting is currently on a contract until 22 September 2026. Should their position become permanent, we will review the Support Worker contract at that time.

National Registers of Communication

Professionals working with Deaf and Deafblind People (NRCPD)

as a

Note Taker

and have experience of supporting D/deaf individual/s with professional or educational notetaking.

Job description



Role Purpose




To provide professional notetaking support for an employee who is deaf. Their role is to review cases and investigate suspected miscarriages of justice.


This role may therefore provide support during informal or professional meetings, during phone conversations with external parties such as applicants or their legal representatives, and when reviewing audio material such as body-worn camera footage.


The priority for this role is to provide support for the nominated employee, which may be up to 20 hours per week but will vary in line with the specific workload for the employee. During periods where support is not required, the postholder will also assist with routine administrative tasks that are non-urgent within the wider team.

Key Responsibilities & Tasks




Specialist Note-Taking Support

Provide accurate and clear notes during internal and external meetings, primarily online however there may be occasional need to attend in-person meetings with the employee. This may include a requirement to travel nationally within the UK. Support the employee by joining telephone calls with a variety of parties, to take notes and provide a written summary of the discussion as appropriate. Transcribe or summarise audio material (e.g. from body-worn camera footage or voice recordings), ensuring accuracy and clarity. Adapt note-taking style to suit the context and preferences of the employee. Ensure all notes are delivered promptly, clearly formatted, and securely stored in line with confidentiality requirements.

Communication Support

Work closely with the employee to understand their access needs and adapt support as needed. Liaise with internal and external colleagues to coordinate note-taking provision for scheduled meetings or calls. Maintain professional and confidential standards of practice at all times in accordance with NRCPD guidelines

Administrative Support

Assist the administrative team with non-urgent tasks during periods when note-taking is not required. Tasks may include: + Inputting case-related details into the Commission?s case management system and maintaining up-to-date case records and other databases
+ Working with colleagues to maintain the administration manuals, updating where necessary and incorporating any policy or procedure amendments
+ Preparation of case documents for scanning and profiling of scanned documents
+ Responding to correspondence from potential applicants
+ Filing and document management
+ Drafting routine correspondence
+ General clerical support

Essential Criteria:



Lead:

Experience of supporting D/deaf individual/s with professional or educational notetaking.

Lead:

Registered or accredited with the National Registers of Communication Professionals working with Deaf and Deafblind People (NRCPD) as a Note Taker. Experience of using various MS Office software (Word, Teams, Outlook, Excel) with high competence. Excellent written English, with strong grammar, spelling, and summarisation skills. High standard of accuracy and attention to detail. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately and in line with data protection regulations. Flexible, adaptable, and able to manage workload in response to changing demands.

Desirable Criteria:



Experience transcribing or summarising audio from recordings such as body-worn cameras. Administrative experience in an office environment. Familiarity with accessibility and inclusion best practices in the workplace.

Memberships




Registered or accredited with the National Registers of Communication Professionals working with Deaf and Deafblind People (NRCPD) as a Note Taker.

This will be a timed exercise

,

where candidates will be provided with a video recording of a short meeting and asked to provide notes on the meeting. Instructions will be provided to shortlisted candidates only. This exercise will be assessed by the panel and scored. Depending on the number of candidates who are invited to undertake this task, you may need to pass this exercise to be invited for final interview. This will be confirmed if you are invited to undertake the task.


Final panel interviews will be held on

19 and 20 February 2026

via Microsoft Teams.
