Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Assist service users who need support with their personal hygiene. This includes: washing, bathing, maintaining oral hygiene, choosing suitable clothing and dressing / undressing, personal toilet needs as well as promoting the individual's motivation to care for themselves.
2. Assist service users who need support with eating and promote service user's ability to manage eating and drinking independently. Ensuring that the service user has appropriate aids and equipment needed to enable independence in eating and drinking.
3. Assist in the preparation and presentation of meals and beverages. Giving due regard for service users being able to exercise personal choice, preferences, likes and dislikes taking into account religious and cultural needs, being aware of any identified health requirements relating to physiological needs i.e. diabetes, weight, tissue viability, etc.
4. Promote meal times as being a socially enjoyable occasion.
5. Support service users who may be experiencing emotional difficulties, in a person sensitive manner and in accordance with strategies that may be detailed in the individual service user's care plan.
6. Positively support service users who present with behaviour(s) that may from time to time be challenging to themselves or service providers. In doing so, ensure that management strategies / guidelines detailed within the individual's care plan are adhered to.
7. Support service users in being able to practice their spiritual beliefs including observation of religious and cultural customs.
8. Assist in supporting the service user with sensitivity and respect in regard to ageing, illness, mental health and/or learning disability.
9. Actively listen to, encourage and be responsive to service user's views, wishes and aspirations.
10. Support and assist service users' involvement in domestic or household tasks as is their wish to do so.
11. Support service users with their mobility needs, ensuring that independent mobility is promoted whenever possible. Ensure that service users who utilise a wheelchair can do so safely.
12. Support service users in preparation for and retiring to bed, ensuring that there is flexibility in the times that the service user goes to bed and gets up in the mornings.
13. Assist service users in making their bed, tidy their room and put away laundered clothing.
14. Enable service users to use their preferred means of communication. In so doing, enable and promote service users expression of choice, decision making and needs.
15. Be responsive to the need as a Care Worker to learn and use supportive / alternative means of communication such as: Makaton signs, symbols, pictures and objects of reference with service users as appropriate and help towards creating a 'Total Communication' environment.
16. Support service users in having access to and being able to choose from a range of appropriate leisure activities both in-house and in community settings to commensurate with existing risk assessments and on a 1-1 basis.
17. Assist with and monitor the general health needs of service users, including supporting service users who are unwell, in liaison with primary generic services as and where necessary.
18. Actively assist and participate in the assessment of service user's needs, development of care plans and their evaluation.
19. Assist and support service users to achieve individual goals as set out in their individual care plans.
20. Ensure that service user records are read and accurately maintained.
21. Assist in developing and reviewing appropriate risk assessments and management strategies aimed at minimising / reducing risks to individual service users.
22. Assist the Home Manager in meeting the minimum care standards laid down by the Care Quality Commission.
23. Promote the aims, objectives and philosophy of the home as set out within the home's Statement of Purpose.
24. Participate in key areas of staff induction.
25. Participate with the Home Manager in regular supervision needed in order to effectively support service users in their care.
26. Prepare for and participate in an individual appraisal yearly with the Proprietor/Home's Manager to review performance against this job description and agree personal development plan.
27. Participate in regular staff/team meetings.
28. Be familiar with and carry out the organisation's policies and procedures.
29. Be prepared to perform the role of 'Keyworker' in line with the Home policy.
30. To support service users to access if they wish, their own Person Centred Plan.
31. To support service users with the security of their home.
32. To support and assist service users in the kitchen with cooking, preparation of menus, serving meals, etc.
33. Provide rota cover that may include night shifts as directed by the Manager when possible.
34. The post holder may be directed from time to time by the Home Manager to carry out other duties and responsibilities to commensurate with his/her post, knowledge and experience.
Knowledge and Skills:
1. Participate in training required to meet service user's assessed needs.
2. The ability to be flexible and work as a member of a team.
3. Strive to maintain own competence and improve knowledge and skills by identifying own learning needs and evaluating personal development through the supervision process.
4. Maintain and protect confidentiality in respect to service users and the organisation.
5. Following appropriate training and assessed competence, support service users in the administration of their prescribed medication.
