Mother-Baby Support Workers play a vital role in providing compassionate, practical, and educational support to mothers and their infants within a supported accommodation or semi-independent setting. Working in line with Ofsted standards, they ensure the safety, wellbeing, and development of both mother and baby, promoting parenting capacity, safeguarding, and positive outcomes.
Support Workers are responsible for delivering direct support, contributing to care plans, maintaining accurate documentation, and upholding the values of dignity, respect, and empowerment in all interactions. This role demands flexibility, emotional resilience, and a strong understanding of safeguarding and childcare frameworks.
Key Responsibilities:
Care and Support Delivery
Provide direct, person-centred support to mothers and their babies based on individual assessed needs.
Implement, monitor, and evaluate care/support plans in collaboration with the wider professional team.
Promote secure attachment and healthy mother-infant bonding.
Educate and support mothers in practical parenting skills (e.g. feeding, bathing, nappy changing).
Offer guidance on infant safety, sleep routines, and responsive care.
Conduct regular emotional wellbeing checks, identifying signs of postnatal depression or distress.
Accompany mothers and infants to health appointments, community services, or activities.
Safeguarding and Risk Management
Recognise and respond to safeguarding concerns in line with local and national safeguarding procedures.
Monitor and report on the safety and welfare of both mother and baby.
Maintain a safe, hygienic, and welcoming environment, identifying and managing risks proactively.
Record Keeping and Compliance
Accurately document all support activities, observations, incidents, and outcomes.
Complete and maintain required paperwork in accordance with Ofsted standards and internal policies.
Ensure confidentiality and secure handling of sensitive information.
Family and Community Engagement
Involve partners, family members, and significant others in care and parenting support (where appropriate).
Support mothers to access education, employment, or training opportunities as part of long-term independence planning.
Professional Development and Practice
Work in accordance with the Children's Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and the associated Quality Standards.
Attend supervision, team meetings, and training sessions as required.
Reflect on practice and contribute to service development and continuous improvement initiatives.
Additional Duties
Float among various service sites, providing consistent quality support.
Support mothers experiencing mental health challenges.
Deliver structured Key Work Sessions (KWS) tailored to individual development goals.
Essential Qualifications and Experience:
Level 3 Diploma
in Residential Childcare or equivalent qualification (e.g. Health & Social Care, Early Years, Supporting Teaching and Learning).
Minimum
2 years' experience
working in a mother and baby unit or similar supported accommodation setting.
Experience working with
vulnerable adults and children

Up-to-date
Enhanced DBS
check (or willingness to undergo one).
