BMI is seeking an experienced and business-minded Sustainability Lead to drive our efforts in expanding, refining and maturing our compliance-focused sustainability programme. The Sustainability Lead will play a critical role in ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations and focusing the sustainability programme on those tasks and projects that align with our business objectives. The ideal candidate will bring a depth of knowledge of domestic and international regulatory regimes, best-in-class practices and methodologies to successfully track compliance and provide strategic guidance on existing business and operational initiatives designed to achieve sustainability goals.


The Sustainability Lead will develop standards for tracking progress on BMI's sustainability initiatives; maintain our focus on commercially-driven decisions and ensure a focused and fit-for-purpose approach for BMI's sustainability commitments.


This is an exciting opportunity for a passionate, commercially savvy sustainability professional to translate sustainability strategy and regulation into real operational impact, building from the ground up.

Key business responsibilities

include:

General:



Lead the development and execution of BMI's sustainability program and objectives, with a primary initial focus on ensuring compliance with ESG related regulations. Ensure ongoing strategic alignment with Standard Industries' Sustainability objectives and priorities. Align cross-functional teams to deliver programs aimed at achieving business-based sustainability objectives, with clear accountabilities and identification of cost and benefits supporting BMI's wider strategic objectives. Develop company-wide aligned roadmaps with clear accountabilities, costs and benefits supporting the Sustainability agenda. Collaborate with the Leadership Team and functional leaders to ensure alignment and integration of strategic priorities. Risk Management: Identify and assess Sustainability related risks, impacts and opportunities. Maintain current knowledge of technological and regulatory developments in environmental sustainability and facility management. Stay abreast of industry trends and best practices in sustainability, shaping the company's ESG strategy. Define key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to track progress on compliance sustainability initiatives. Develop dashboards and reporting mechanisms to provide regular updates to senior management and stakeholders.

Compliance:



Develop specific regulatory compliance programmes with clear BMI-functional accountabilities and timelines e.g., EU CSRD. Manage stakeholder engagement, risk mitigation. Develop readiness activities, roadmap to compliance and ensure cross-functional alignment. With respective functions coordinate the process to ensure compliance with audit/assurance requirements.

Governance:



Report on progress on the sustainability programme to BMI's Sustainability Governance Committee, as well as the Sustainability Steering Committee at Standard Industries. Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with various stakeholders, including investors, customers, employees, supply chain partners, NGOs and community groups.

ESG Reporting:



Oversee the preparation and publication of ESG reports and disclosures, ensuring regulatory and stakeholder requirements, while considering industry and cross-industry best practices. Identify and maintain the ESG data universe, manage data aggregation and facilitate the process to meet assurance requirements in terms of accuracy, completeness and reliability. Monitor proposed and enacted actual regulations to assess the impact to BMI, including new reporting and data requirements. Identify gaps between current programmes and new regulations and develop action plans to address any such gaps.

Business & Operational Planning:



Collaborate with various functional stakeholders including Procurement, Sales, R&D and Manufacturing to incorporate sustainability objectives into innovation, supplier management, waste management and other operational programmes, processes and policies. Anticipate and mitigate risks that may impact the organisation's compliance, sustainability performance or competitive position. Support development of contingency plans and alternative strategies by other business leaders to address potential challenges and uncertainties including but not limited to climate and supplier risk. Measures and forecasts the net impact of sustainability and operational activities on overall EPD's and LCA's driving towards continued improvement. Develop due diligence strategies to mitigate risks e.g., Climate and capitalise on opportunities to enhance the company's Sustainability performance.

REQUIREMENTS:



Professional Experiences & Qualifications:



10+ years of professional experience (several years of which within a business-based sustainability function) within the manufacturing/industrials space, with a proven track record in leading successful initiatives. In-depth knowledge of domestic and international environmental regulations, compliance and sustainability reporting standards and frameworks including but not limited to EU CSRD, TCFD, Greenhouse Gas Protocol, Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB), Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), PPWR, Packaging EPR etc. Knowledge of GHG emission calculations and verification and environmental and carbon accounting software. Proven sustainability leadership experience, commercial acumen, and ability to influence across and collaborate with a wide array of stakeholders.

Strong project management skills, excellent communication abilities, and an understanding of environmental impact assessments. Ability to operate effectively in a matrix organisation to deliver business outcomes. Exceptional strategic thinking and problem-solving skills with the ability to translate vision into actionable plans. Experience in leading teams, building relationships, fostering a culture of high performance, innovation and continuous improvement. Strong influencing skills to effectively communicate complex ideas and gain buy-in from stakeholders across all levels globally; challenge the status quo and build followership. Ability to guide decision-making processes aligned with strategic goals.
