Job Overview
The role of Engineering systems Design Engineer is to design, develop and maintain internal engineering and manufacturing systems that improve efficiency, accuracy, and standardisation across the business.
This role focuses on developing and implementing digital tools and configurators that automate routine engineering tasks (e.g. product design configurators, BOM generation, and document workflows) to support the Paneltex product portfolio and Engineering Department operations.
Paneltex designs and builds commercial vehicle bodywork and ancillary components for all sizes of vehicles.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Design and develop internal product configurator tools (e.g. rule-based configurators for body layouts, chassis selections, component options, etc.) to reduce manual design workload.
Develop and maintain engineering data systems -- including parametric CAD templates, standard part libraries, and automated drawing generation.
Create and manage interfaces between Autodesk Inventor/Vault and MBOM systems.
Support integration of engineering workflows (design approvals, revisions, Vault lifecycle states, etc.) into automated systems.
Implement standardisation and reusability of product data through configuration rules, templates, and scripts.
Identify opportunities to automate or simplify repetitive engineering tasks and propose digital solutions.
Work with engineers to capture design rules, logic, and decision criteria for automation.
Support development of new system modules (e.g., specification generators, costing tools, or capacity planning dashboards).
Provide user training, documentation, and troubleshooting support for internally developed systems.
Maintain version control, testing, and release management for system updates.
Translate engineering requirements into technical system specifications.
Manage small-scale system development projects, including scoping, testing, and roll-out.
Provide and teach technical skills to develop existing and new design methods and systems and develop and improve methods of work within the design process.
Amend/update and manage drawing control as a result of performing design changes and improvements.
Liaison with other departments to ensure effective communication.
Coordination with the other Engineering disciplines and stakeholders.
Responsible for leading and guiding project success whether design Engineering or as part of a project team.
Maintains communication with departments to ensure production priorities and shortfalls are addressed in a timely manner.
Keep the Design office lead engineer informed on progress of team projects, with agreed periodicity.
Support and Mentor others with proven approved design methods and systems.
Review and support the work of the others in the design Engineering team.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Technical experience with preferred background in engineering qualifications (mechanically & electrical) and minimum 5 years' experience in a similar position/industry.
Strong proficiency in Autodesk Inventor, iLogic, and Vault (customisation, automation, and data structures).
Understanding of engineering data management and BOM structures (EBOM, MBOM).
Familiarity with SQL databases or integration principles.
Understanding of engineering workflows, version control, and product lifecycle management (PLM).
MS Office fluency (at least Word, Excel and Outlook)
Good engineering knowledge of materials and their properties (particularly steel, timber and GRP composites).
An understanding of Design for Manufacture.
Experience of working within a Lean Manufacturing environment.
Ability to visualise solutions (and problems!)
Ability to translate complex engineering processes into logical automation workflows.
Highly organised, with attention to detail and change control discipline.
Excellent communications skills both written and verbal and able to communicate effectively with other members of staff in all departments including the shop floor.
Ability to work to strict deadlines and record project progress to set deadlines.
Able to lead and deliver project meetings to all levels of the business.
Proficient with MS Office applications such as MS Word MS Excel, MS PowerPoint etc.
Critical thinking with exceptional problem-solving skills, able to work independently or in a team environment.
Effective communication includes speaking, writing, active listening and taking instructions.
Ability to prioritise and organise workload in order to meet deadlines.
