Volant Autonomy is a deeptech startup developing autonomy solutions to transform the future of aviation. Based in the centre of Bath, we are building a suite of technologies to enable safe autonomous flight. Our work includes partnerships with organisations including Rolls-Royce, AdaCore, several aerospace primes, air navigation service providers and the defence industry.
Role Overview
We are seeking a Systems Engineer to join our Safety Critical product team. You will contribute directly to the development of Traject, our innovative detect and avoid solution to help operators fly safely, efficiently, and in compliance with evolving regulations.
The ideal candidate will have at least three years of industry experience and be enthusiastic about contributing across the full product lifecycle - from early-stage planning to development, deployment, and operational support.
Key Responsibilities
Contribute to the design, development, integration, and testing of the Traject DAA (Detect and Avoid) system across diverse customer environments and operational contexts
Define and manage system and subsystem requirements, ensuring full traceability from high-level requirements through to implementation and verification
Participate in the creation, review, and maintenance of Interface Control Documents (ICDs) to ensure clear and consistent communication between system components
Support the development and qualification of Volant's Human-Machine Interface (HMI), ensuring usability and compliance with operational needs
Plan and execute system-level Verification and Validation (V&V) activities, including test case development, execution, and results analysis
Contribute to the certification process by developing supporting documentation and engaging in regulatory reviews
Prepare detailed and compliant documentation to support product certification efforts
Skills and Experience
Essential
Proven experience applying the full systems engineering V-model, from concept through to verification and validation
Demonstrated capability in end-to-end requirements management, including requirements elicitation, specification, traceability, and verification
Experience authoring documentation required for software-related certification applications (e.g., for aviation or safety-critical systems)
Proficient in engaging with end users and stakeholders to derive operational and functional requirements
Ability to interpret, derive, and validate requirements from a range of sources, including standards, regulations, and stakeholder inputs
Desirable
Familiarity with emerging frameworks and regulatory standards for unmanned systems, such as SORA (Specific Operations Risk Assessment)
Background or domain knowledge in aerospace systems and associated operational environments
Experience integrating systems that span multiple domains, including cloud-based infrastructure and embedded platforms
Experience writing software, with practical knowledge of standard development practices such as API design and version control
Solid understanding of software assurance standards, specifically DO-178C
Understanding of DO-254 and its application to hardware components in airborne systems
Exposure to or experience with formal specification languages, such as TLA+ or Alloy
