Cranleigh seeks to appoint, starting January 2026, a strong honours graduate to teach Biology. Depending on their experience, the successful candidate will teach a selection of classes in Biology from years 9 to 13 in a lively and ambitious Department, as well as taking a full part in the life of this busy and friendly boarding school. The post will run for at least two terms and potentially three terms.
The Department is accommodated in a superb, dedicated facility with four laboratories and a well-appointed prep room. There are currently seven teachers in the Department and a full-time technician. The team is a friendly and open one, committed to providing all pupils with the opportunity to fulfil their potential. Weekly Department meetings allow colleagues to share good practice and discuss both curricular and school-wide issues.
We are looking for an energetic character who can effectively communicate their enthusiasm for Biology with humour, patience and skill. The successful candidate will have an excellent knowledge of, and enthusiasm for, the subject and is likely to hold a good honours degree in Biology (or another closely related subject). They will be self-motivated and will relish the challenge presented by being part of a highly successful Department. A commitment to pupils, the Department and the wider life of the School, plus a firm grasp of curricular developments, are important, as are empathy, organisation, collegiality, a sense of humour and the ability to sustain and enhance the Department's delivery of Biology.
The ideal candidate will be flexible, adaptable, innovative and a good team player.
In addition, they will be expected to get involved in all aspects of this busy boarding school, including acting as a tutor to a group of students within a House. This would normally include one evening duty per week. All teachers are expected to contribute to the School's co-curricular programme alongside their academic responsibilities.
Please read 'Join our team' on our website, which will provide an impression of the ethos to which it is expected that the successful candidate will contribute.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss any aspect of the post informally, please get in touch with Mr Will Irving, Head of Science and Head of Biology, by email in the first instance: wgoi@cranleigh.org.
