Job overview

----------------

King Edward's School is seeking to appoint a permanent full-time Teacher of Mathematics to teach across the full age range from 1st January 2026. It is an opportunity to join a strong, enthusiastic, very supportive and friendly department in an exceptional school.

We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds and no experience of working in the independent sector is required. A willingness to participate in the wider life of the school with pastoral care duties and help with co-curricular activities is essential. While this role is advertised as full-time, part-time applications may be considered for the right candidate.

The Mathematics Department

There is a rich tradition at King Edward's School for celebrating the problem-solving skills of Mathematicians in many ways, be it within a classroom, thriving in wider challenges within the UKMT, or developing a steady flow of students who leave to study Mathematics or Mathematically centred courses at the world's most exciting and prestigious institutions.

We are a department who love teaching Mathematics in a school of boys who love learning it, making for an exciting working atmosphere, where colleagues work collaboratively on developing the formidable skills of pupils whose enjoyment of being challenged frequently matches our own.

We have a Head of Faculty who line manages three Heads of Mathematics, who design and run programmes in the lower, middle and upper schools, meaning thorough and detailed resources are prepared with elements that branch across a boy's programme of learning, through which we track, support and encourage when needed. The spine of teacher resources (with some common assessments) is provided, but we have a variety of teaching styles between colleagues and believe that boys benefit from experiencing this range: there is no expectation that specific lessons should be taught in specific ways. We seek to recruit dynamic and original teachers who carve their own path to becoming an excellent teacher at King Edward's School.

In the lower school, Year 7 are taught in forms but in Years 8 and 9 they are set with increasing refinements to greater complement their most suitable rates of learning. The setting is not algorithmic and pupils in "lower" KES sets will go on to high achievement: our aim is to complement boys' various methods of developing. There is support provided for boys who struggle in Year 7, as well as extension puzzles for those who quickly show the desire and aptitude.

In Years 10 and 11, boys are taught Edexcel IGCSE Maths (4MA1), which has provided a successful base for many years: even as the largest department in the school, our exam results have been amongst the school's finest for many years now. The top three classes are also taught AQA Level 2 in Mathematics within the same lesson space, ensuring that able boys are fully challenged ahead of the larger tests likely to come later.

This September we moved to A Levels after many years with the IB diploma and we will bring the many valuable benefits of those programmes to our teaching. Most boys in the Sixth Form will study A Level Mathematics, with three sets for the large number of Further Mathematicians. Therefore, the successful candidate will have a double allocation of teaching to develop the subject to sufficient depth, as well as preparing for TMUA/MAT tests that some of the most mathematically vivid courses increasingly expect. One set will also cover all of Edexcel's Further Pure modules, leading to the teaching of Number Theory and other university level content.

Every year, most boys in the school sit a Maths Challenge qualification, with many going on to considerable successes. We have seen KES boys gain the highest scores in the Midlands in recent years, whilst a team including two Year 11 KES boys recently won the National Cipher Challenge.

IT is widely used in innovative ways, by way of Casio CG-50 calculators (which all boys from Year 10 upwards must have), whilst Desmos is increasingly used in class and forms a key activity in Year 9, for which we have two trolleys of laptops available.

The department comprises 14 members of staff, one of whom works part-time, and the responsibilities held in other parts of the school include Assistant Head, Head of Tennis and three of the Heads of Year. The department is versatile, and all colleagues support each other throughout the school day and beyond. The department meets regularly and has 10 classrooms put aside for the teaching of Mathematics.

We are proud of this department in an extraordinary school and seek an ambitious Mathematician to help us build upon what we have achieved thus far.
