Mill Water School is an all-age special school for pupils with severe and complex learning difficulties, including Autism. Mill Water School is an all-age special school for pupils with severe and complex learning difficulties, including Autism.


From EYFS through to Post 16, our pupils access a bespoke learning and communication package to challenge their educational progress, working in partnership with multi-agency professionals and families.


We now have an exciting opportunity for an Apprentice TA to join our class teams. Ideally, you will have experience of working with children but the right personal qualities can be as important.


We are seeking an enthusiastic and committed person to join our school.


The Apprentice Teaching Assistant will work under the direct instruction of teaching/senior staff, usually in the classroom, to support access to learning for pupils with SEN and provide general support to the teacher in the management of pupils and the classroom.


With the appropriate training the Apprentice Teaching Assistant will meet the needs of the pupils and attend their general welfare, this could include supporting pupils with personal care, administering medications and supporting with feeding.


The Apprentice Teaching Assistant may learn to carry out a number of therapeutic programs with some pupils such as hydrotherapy, physiotherapy and speech therapy.


An ability to work positively within a team of classroom assistants is essential in order to maximise pupil learning and contribute to an inspiring learning environment.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES


To work under instruction and guidance to enable access to learning by:


Attending to the welfare and personal care of pupils Delivering pre-determined learning/care/support programmes Implementing literacy/numeracy programmes Undertaking general clerical/administrative support for the teacher or department
DUTIES General:


Attending to the pupils' general welfare, personal needs and personal hygiene across the full age range of 3 - 19 years. Carrying out feeding, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy programmes, as set by an appropriate therapist Accompany pupils to outside work experience. Assisting with pupils' mobility.
Support the teacher by:


Creating and maintaining a purposeful, orderly and supportive environment, in accordance with lesson plans
Assisting with the display of pupils' work Using strategies, in liaison with the teacher, to support pupils to achieve learning goals


Monitoring pupils' responses to learning activities and accurately recording achievement/progress as directed Providing detailed and regular feedback to teachers on pupils' achievement, progress, problems etc Promoting good pupil behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents in line with established policy and encouraging pupils to take responsibility for their own behaviour Establishing constructive relationships with parents/carers and where appropriate participating in feedback sessions with parents alongside the teacher Administering routine tests, invigilating exams and undertaking routine marking of pupils' work Providing clerical/administrative support e.g. photocopying, typing, filing, money, administration of course work etc
Support pupils by:


Supervising and providing particular support for pupils, ensuring their safety and access to learning activities Assisting with the development and implementation of Individual Education/Behaviour Plans and Personal Care Programmes Establishing constructive relationships with pupils and interacting with them according to individual needs Promoting the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils Encouraging pupils to interact with others and to engage in activities led by the teacher Setting challenging and demanding expectations and promoting self-esteem and independence Providing feedback to pupils in relation to progress and achievement under the guidance of the teacher.


Hours: 30.00 per week

The successful candidate will need to be tolerant, understanding, show care and concern whilst being fair and consistent.


They must be resilient and committed to improving outcomes for pupils and a good sense of humour is essential.





On completion of the course, the apprentice will be able to apply for a teaching assistant position if available. The experience gained during the course will serve well for applying for a permanent position and many apprentices have gone on to permanent positions following a successful recruitment process.



Training Provided:


You will attend college one day a month during term time. When at work you will be visited by an assessor every 8 weeks. Upon completion of the course you will achieve the Level 3 Teaching Assistant apprenticeship.
