About the role

The Mechanical Engineering Department wishes to appoint either a Teaching Fellow or a Senior Teaching Fellow to contribute to its teaching and to a programme of development of its taught undergraduate courses, specifically in Solid Mechanics and Design. This position will be committed to the teaching activities of the Department and contributing to the long-term mission of our student experience.



We are seeking a new member of our Teaching team to develop the Solid Mechanics and Mechanical Design modules for our Undergraduate curriculum. The post-holder will be part of our Learning & Teaching Team, working closely with other Teaching Fellows and Academics to help us continue to offer an outstanding learning experience for our students, preparing them for their future careers in engineering.



The Department of Mechanical Engineering has an outstanding international reputation for teaching. Its undergraduate MEng degree course is a four-year programme, with an intake of 180 students per year; the course is delivered by approx. 50 Teaching and Academic staff. The course comprises two years of core subjects, covering the full range of interests in Mechanical Engineering before offering significant choice and specialisation in years 3 and 4. The variety is enabled and strengthened by the world-leading research of the department.


What you would be doing

Develop and deliver teaching materials in lectures, tutorials, seminars and laboratory/workshop sessions. Identify where current provision is in need of revision or improvement and proactively address this. Contribute to the planning, design and development of the curriculum. Supervise student (UG and PG) individual and group projects. Be responsible for the pastoral care of students within a specified area. Contribute towards the organisation and marking of exams and coursework. A significant portion of the role will focus on co-ordinating academic teams in the creation and implementation of new postgraduate taught course.

What we are looking for

You will hold a degree or equivalent qualification in a related discipline/be nearing the completion of a postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline or relevant industry experience. You will work towards obtaining an appropriate teaching qualification. You will have a background in design and solid mechanics (preferred), though other areas relevant to mechanical engineering will also be considered. You will have experience teaching and administering undergraduate engineering or related discipline activities. You will demonstrate recent, proven competence in teaching or tutoring at undergraduate/postgraduate level and be capable of teaching effectively at both levels. You will be able to teach mechanics as applied in engineering systems, including the use of free body diagrams and mathematical modelling of systems involving motion and forces.
