About the role:
LUC is seeking a Technical Artist to join our GIS and Visualisation team. The candidate will join our growing interactive team who are using the capabilities of game engine technology to build immersive consultation and digital planning tools to help clients respond to environmental challenges and achieve positive outcomes for communities and the natural environment.
This role is ideal for someone looking to continue the development of their skills in Unreal Engine, interactive design and real-time 3D tools with a focus on addressing the climate emergency. The role is an exciting opportunity to build on growing connections between game development and public engagement.
You will work alongside our established team of real-time environment artists and technical specialists to help deliver interactive, touchscreen 3D platforms used in community consultations. These allow the public to explore large-scale infrastructure, renewable energy and landscape proposals with clarity, transparency and meaningful engagement.
You will be supported by senior team members and will collaborate with colleagues across the wider consultancy--including landscape architects, planners, ecologists, designers and GIS specialists. Many of our projects are multidisciplinary, offering a diverse, meaningful and varied workload.

Interactive touchscreen platforms for public consultation.
Visualisation in support of Impact Assessments for infrastructure, residential and renewable energy schemes.
360 Virtual viewpoint experiences
Future climate resilient landscape visualisations
Visualisation of new public realm spaces
The role includes the opportunity to share and participate actively in the management and ownership of the business through the Employee Ownership Trust, which places full ownership of the company with the employees.
This role can be based in any of LUC's offices (London, Cardiff, Bristol, Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow or Sheffield). We work in a hybrid model with people being in the office a minimum of two days per week. There will also be travel required to visit sites, client offices and other office locations.
A full-time role is based on 37.5 hours per week (Monday to Friday). However, LUC has a strong track record in flexible working, and we have been recognised for our flexible working culture, so we are happy to discuss a range of flexible working options for this role including part time hours (minimum 30 hours per week) if desired.
Salary: 26,250 - 28,050 FTE, Dependent on experience (plus London allowance of 4,000 if applicable)
Experience and qualifications
The successful candidate will have enthusiasm for real-time visualisation and interactive 3D tools. They will demonstrate solid Unreal Engine fundamentals, creativity in problem-solving, and a thoughtful approach to user interaction and technical development. Strong communication skills and a willingness to learn are essential. We are looking for someone who will help to champion the use of game engine technology in the environmental sector.
Essential
Degree or postgraduate qualification in a relevant field (e.g. Games Development, Computer Science, 3D Art & Animation, Interactive Media, Visualisation or similar).
Unreal Engine
Good working knowledge of Blueprints
Experience working with Unreal Motion Graphics (UMG) UI, interactive systems or basic gameplay-style logic.
An interest in building touchscreen-friendly interactions and navigation systems.
Ability to follow guidance, learn new technical concepts quickly and contribute to team problem-solving.
A collaborative approach and willingness to support the wider team.
Strong Desire to learn about and be involved in the environmental sector
Desirable
Experience working with large landscapes/open-world formats, including World Partitioning, Nanite, Lumen, LODs and level streaming.
Understanding of data-driven workflows (data tables, JSON, external config files)
Packaging and deployment experience for Windows-based interactive applications.
Exposure to Unreal's Web API / HTTP systems.
Experience using or integrating the Cesium or ArcGIS Maps SDK plugin.
Experience with VR or AR (interaction or setup).
Knowledge of GIS, mapping tools or coordinate systems.
Experience importing or optimising content from Blender, 3ds Max or CAD.
Familiarity with version control (e.g. Perforce or Git).
Familiarity with Visual Studio and C++ debugging fundamentals.
UK Driving Licence.
