The Role


This newly created role offers a unique opportunity to shape and lead our Technical Engineering practice. We're seeking a skilled consultant with proven experience in the development of Technical Documentation (TD) and Interactive Electronic Technical Publications (IETPs) who's eager to contribute their expertise, share insights, and help define the next chapter of our technical offering through collaboration and innovation.

Your responsibilities will include:


Provision of expert advice to clients on TD/IETP standards, processes, and compliance requirements (e.g. Def Stan 00-601, S1000D. Advise clients on the design, setup, and optimisation of Common Source Databases (CSDBs) and document management systems to improve efficiency and data integrity. Translate complex engineering data such as Drawings, Bill of Materials (BOM), wiring diagrams etc, into clear, compliant publications that impacts through-life product support and operational effectiveness. Collaborate closely with client engineering and supportability teams to understand systems, identify documentation needs, and propose practical, standards-aligned solutions. Conduct technical reviews and audits of client data and documentation to assess quality, compliance, and readiness for delivery. Develop and implement documentation strategies and plans that align with client objectives and MOD requirements. Support project delivery by managing documentation schedules, risks, and dependencies as part of wider Integrated Product Support workstreams. Mentor and support junior consultants and authors, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement across the capability.

In your first 3-6 months, success might look like:


Building strong working relationships with Whitetree colleagues and clients, demonstrating trust and reliability in project delivery. Supporting the development and strategic direction of a future service offering. Conducting documentation or technical reviews with clients, providing constructive feedback and implementing improvements where needed. Production of high-quality TD including S1000D-compliant and IETPs that demonstrate accuracy, clarity, and consistency. Helping to build capability within the Supportability Engineering team.

Skills & experience required


S1000D Expertise: Specialised knowledge of Technical Publications S1000D - the international specification for technical publications, including: Data Module / Schema production and management; Working Knowledge on Simplified English standard ASD-STE. Common Source Database (CSDB): Working knowledge of Adobe FrameMaker or similar tool and Common Source Database (CSDB). Defence and Industry Standards: Knowledge of MoD ILS processes and standards such as, Def-Stan 00-601 Business Rules, Def-Stan 00-600 Integrated Logistics Support requirements for MOD projects and the IPS S-Series. Industry Experience: A proven background in the defence industry or engineering. Ex-military experience is highly valued. Consulting Acumen: Exceptional consulting abilities with a collaborative and ambitious mindset. Project Delivery: A strong track record of successful project delivery including conduct of technical / deliverable reviews and monitor technical health of projects. Client Focus and Communication: An effective communicator with a strong, demonstrable commitment to client satisfaction. Business Development: An aptitude to drive growth by developing current and future clients. Team Building: Coaching and mentoring skills, able to support future Technical Authors. Right To Work: Current right to live and work in the UK. Security Clearance: Current SC clearance or willing and eligible to undergo a Security Clearance check. Willingness and ability to work from home and travel for client engagements, including overnight stays away from home around the UK when required.
