Are you a detail-oriented designer with a passion for turning creative ideas into buildable, real-world solutions? Do you enjoy solving problems, refining technical details, and ensuring that every component fits and functions perfectly?
We're looking for a dedicated Technical Designer to join our design and production team, helping to bring our imaginative playground concepts to life through precise 3D modelling, manufacturing drawings, and technical collaboration.
About Us:
At Precision Timber, we are a family-run company specialising in designing and building natural playgrounds, sustainable outdoor equipment, landscaping, and surfacing. We work across a range of settings, including schools, nurseries, parks, local attractions, and commercial spaces.
We create bespoke outdoor spaces that allow children to explore, be creative, and flourish because every child deserves the opportunity to play.
The Role:
As a Technical Designer, you'll play a crucial role in bridging creativity with functionality. Working closely with our creative, workshop, and installation teams, you'll develop highly accurate 3D models and manufacturing drawings that ensure every piece of playground equipment is safe, durable, and true to design intent. You'll need strong technical skills, a good understanding of materials and fabrication methods (especially timber), and the ability to communicate clearly with internal teams and external suppliers.
Key Responsibilities:
Create accurate and detailed 3D models and assemblies based on design briefs, sketches, concepts, or client specifications
Produce fully detailed technical drawings for manufacture, including part specifications, cutting lists, and fabrication instructions
Collaborate with design, workshop, and installation teams to ensure feasibility, functionality, and cost-effectiveness of designs
Participate in design reviews and offer practical engineering input to enhance assembly, manufacturability, and safety
Ensure all technical documentation complies with playground safety standards (such as EN 1176) and health & safety regulations
Price up bespoke projects by calculating material quantities and labour hours
Modify and revise existing designs based on team feedback, technical challenges, or changes in materials
Maintain version control and accurate records of design files using project management and versioning tools
Liaise with suppliers, joiners and engineers to ensure component compatibility and resolve technical queries
Prepare installation documentation and assembly guides to support site teams
Occasionally assist with site measurements or surveys to support custom or complex design requirements
Assist in maintaining and developing a library of standard product models and templates for increased efficiency
Support with documentation for certification and compliance processes where needed
Skills & Experience Required:
Proven experience in a technical design or CAD-based role, ideally in playground equipment, timber fabrication, furniture design, or similar fields
Proficient in 3D CAD software (e.g., SketchUp, Fusion 360, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar)
Strong understanding of materials (particularly timber), construction methods, and mechanical fixing techniques
High attention to detail and ability to produce clear, accurate technical drawings and documents
Good problem-solving skills and ability to adapt designs based on practical or technical constraints
Familiarity with playground industry standards and safety regulations (EN 1176 knowledge desirable but not essential)
Strong communication skills and the ability to liaise with both creative and technical teams
Ability to manage multiple design files and maintain version control using digital project management tools
A proactive and collaborative attitude and keen to be part of a team that takes pride in quality and creativity
What We Offer:
Competitive salary based on experience
Ongoing training and professional development
Opportunities to contribute to unique, exciting playground projects from concept to completion
