Job Description

We now have a great opportunity to join Comfy Quilts Ltd, one of the largest manufacturers of filled bedding products. We are looking for a highly skilled Technical Electrical Shift Engineer to join our Engineering Team. In this role, you will specialise in providing electrical maintenance across our production machinery, requiring a high level of fault-finding expertise and a strong electrical background. You must be able to work safely, independently, and proactively. Mechanical knowledge would be an advantage.


You will have a strong knowledge of electrical control systems, fault finding, safety circuits, and PLC control systems--including Siemens.


You will be a part of the electrical engineering projects focused on the refurbishment and upgrade of complex machinery, conveyor systems, and packaging lines, leveraging cutting-edge automation, drives, and control technologies.


Above all, your expertise in diagnosing electrical breakdowns and identifying repeat issues will be key to your success. You should be comfortable modifying and creating electrical drawings using EPLAN.


To succeed in this role, you will be time-served electrically and have a solid background working with PLC and control-based systems. With full control system and panel design and build experience, you will thrive on challenges and enjoy working in an environment that supports and promotes long-term improvements to equipment and processes.


Experience essential within the following areas:



18th Edition IET wiring regulations is essential. Qualified to a minimum ONC or equivalent. Safety circuit fault finding and diagnosis (programming of safety PLC's). Knowledge of sensors, proximity, optical etc, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Omron, Telemecanique. Ability to prioritise conflicting work priorities. Ability to work to strict deadlines to minimise down-time. Flexible approach to work as a team player. Flexibility to undertake any relevant task efficiently, on own initiative. Good work ethic is essential, as is reliability and commitment to the company.

Role Responsibilities



Lifecycle electrical design and rebuild of machines, integrating: Electrical panel layout and circuit design using Eplan for professional electrical schematic design. Siemens or Mitsubishi PLC & HMI programming including safety PLC (S7/TIA Portal, GX Works). SCADA/HMI systems using Wonderware Intouch. Inverter & Servo diagnostic and programming. Develop, optimise, and troubleshoot 3-phase motor control systems, including start/stop, variable speed, and directional control using both AC and DC inverter drives. Execute rapid diagnosis and resolution of electrical breakdowns using advanced route cause analysis and systematic fault-finding on: Safety Circuits Motor starters, overloads, soft starters, contractors Sensor systems (optical, inductive proximity, reed switches) Work on inline metal detectors and their settings Maintain and support various printing systems Parameterise, commission, and maintain variable frequency drives (VFDs) and soft starters for dynamic process control applications. Develop and modify robust, modular PLC code for process improvement initiatives, utilising structured programming techniques and implementing best practices for documentation and code management. Continually update detailed electrical drawings, control panel layouts, and system documentation to ensure traceability and regulatory compliance. Self-manage your time across multiple concurrent engineering projects, prioritising urgent breakdown demands against longer-term process improvement goals.

Essential Technical Qualifications & Experience



Electrically time-served: HNC (or higher) in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or equivalent Can demonstrate experience with:

o Siemens and Mitsubishi PLCs (programming, hardware integration, ladder logic, function block diagram)


o SCADA systems, notably Wonderware Intouch (screen design, scripting, alarm management)


o Eplan proficiency in electrical drawings


o Advanced fault-finding and electrical diagnostics in manufacturing automation


o Safety circuit layout, SIL assessment, and machine safeguarding principles


o Control panel design/build in accordance with CE/UKCA regulations and IEE wiring standards
