The Royal College of Art is the world's leading university of art and design, a place where ideas, materials and processes come together to shape the future of creativity. We are looking for a

Technical Instructor (Wood)

to join our community and help students and staff bring their boldest projects to life.

###

The Role

This is a hands-on role at the heart of our Wood workshops. You'll be guiding students through the possibilities of working with timber -- from traditional hand and machine techniques to digitally aided processes -- and helping them explore new ways of making.

You'll contribute to maintaining and developing our Wood technical spaces, making sure tools and equipment are safe, accessible and up to date. You'll support our creative community by demonstrating processes, advising on materials, and helping staff and students of all abilities problem-solve their ideas into reality.

###

What You'll Do

Provide demonstrations, guidance and support in woodworking processes using hand tools, machinery, power tools and digital equipment. Maintain our Wood workshops, ensuring safe, well-kept and inspiring spaces for creative work. Support the growth of our facilities by helping introduce and commission new equipment and resources. Share knowledge through creating learning materials and resources that enrich student experience. Contribute to exhibitions, events and the wider creative life of the College. Champion best practice in health & safety, ensuring safe working environments at all times.
###

About You

We're looking for someone who is:

Confident in a variety of woodworking techniques and experienced in using workshop machinery, power tools and digital processes. Skilled in delivering in-person technical instruction, with the ability to communicate clearly to students and staff from different backgrounds and levels of experience. Organised, proactive and able to work well both independently and as part of a team. Enthusiastic about supporting creativity, problem-solving and innovation through making. Knowledgeable about health & safety standards and risk assessments in workshop settings. (Desirable) Experienced in creating digital or online technical learning resources.
###

Why Join Us?

At the RCA, you'll be working in a vibrant, fast-paced and collaborative environment where no two days are the same. You'll have the chance to share your technical expertise, inspire the next generation of makers, and help shape the future of how wood is explored in art and design.
