The Technical Manager (Intermodal) role has been created to provide a technical focal point for all intermodal activities at LRQA, reporting to the Head of Technical & Quality Governance. Intermodal activities include; shipping containers, offshore containers, portable tank and tank containers, fixed transportable tanks (e.g. road tankers and rail tankers) and gas cylinders.

The role manages all technical accreditations relating to intermodal activities. As part of pro-active accreditation management the role should actively participate in leading standards accreditations relating to the sector to ensure that LRQA can anticipate and plan for regulatory changes. As the Technical Manager and part of the Technical & Quality Governance (TQG) the role is required to collaboratively support internal and external audits, manage the technical community relating to intermodals, participate in TQG meetings and projects designed to ensure that TQG effectively supports the business. The role requires the development and delivery of training material to ensure that LRQA has a technical competitive advantage in the industry sector, to support both LRQA staff and its customers. The role supports the sales & marketing activities relating to renewables to help LRQA grow its renewables business which is a fundamental part of its strategy.

The Technical Manager (Intermodal) is responsible for:


Establish procedures to cover all aspects of the intermodal (container & TPED) business, to satisfy regulatory requirements and improve the authorisation and training process. Provide day to day technical and quality oversight of the global Intermodal team leads ensuring a strong customer focus within the defined area of responsibility. Contribute to the development and maintenance of procedures, including its appendices and ITP's to cover all aspects of the inspection business, to satisfy regulatory requirements and improve the authorisation and training process in conjunction with the relevant Technical Governance Groups and frameworks Contribute to the technical networks to drive technical performance and customer responsiveness. Where gaps in Inspection Service Technical networks are found make recommendations to fill these proactively. Engage with the ISL operational teams to ensure quality aspects of service delivery are implemented, measured and continually improved. Drive the implementation of group and ISL quality metrics within the operations including monitoring activities, investigating complaints and managing feedback (FHS). To challenge others to develop and to act as a role model to support technical development of delivery and sales teams to maintain sustainable and profitable growth To work collaboratively with Internal and external stakeholders to support growth and technical governance across all businesses. Keeps track of lessons learned from investigations and shares those lessons with TQG team members and service/ sales delivery teams. To provide technical guidance and direction recognising deficiencies and implementing effective solutions. Where issues are outside of expertise to seek involvement from wider team whilst maintaining ownership to ensure the issue is resolved. Assist in training, mentoring and developing technical personnel to gain authorisations and supporting the functions of technical authorities and resource authorisers. Manage the implementation and maintenance of the technical authorisations process for employees and subcontractors. To pursue Continuing Professional Development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness. Manage Container/ TPED weekly drop-in sessions with technical network. Represent LRQA by attending internal and external meetings/seminars and participating on technical and trade committees as required. To ensure that activities are conducted in line with internal procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation and industry standards. Ensure the maintenance of external accreditations. Continually seek opportunities to increase customer satisfaction and deepen client relationships.

Key health and safety responsibilities:


Eliminate or minimise employee exposure to risks by regularly reviewing the health and safety risk register, applying appropriate controls, communicating results of risk assessments, and ensuring health and safety is considered in the planning and execution of all LRQA activities. Manage your own, and your team's, compliance with health and safety rules, instructions, systems and legal requirements to ensure employees are suitably trained and adequate resources are available to work safely.

Technical/Professional Qualifications requirements:


Educated to a minimum equivalence of Bachelor's Degree level and an Incorporated Engineer (Civil, Electrical or Mechanical) - or working towards that level Comprehensive understanding of the main codes and standards applicable to the area of responsibility including as a minimum the following regulations: TPED, TPER, ADR, RID, IMDG, USDOT, CSC, Offshore Container Regulations Experienced in taking a technical lead in providing authoritative advice, guidance and arbitration on technical matters both internally and externally. Good communication skills and fluent in English are essential and the ability to lead the technical support group, manage regulatory audits, write procedures and technical guidance documents, mentor other surveyors within LRQA and represent the business to clients and on technical committees Global role - available to travel to support the business
