Technical Services Intern (materials Testing)

Newark-on-Trent, ENG, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

Looking to apply your scientific knowledge to real-world projects?

Join

Formula

- part of Saint-Gobain UK & Ireland - for a

12-month internship

that transforms your degree into meaningful, hands-on experience.

At Formula, we manufacture

high-performance gypsum-based products

used in construction and numerous industrial applications across the UK and beyond. From plaster to specialist formulations, our products are essential to modern buildings - and we're continually innovating to improve performance, reduce environmental impact, and support the shift toward low-carbon construction.

As part of our Technical Services Team in Newark, you'll support key business projects that drive this transformation - including work linked to "BLUEBIRD Tower", an innovative, scalable redevelopment of our production site. You'll play a real role in testing and developing materials, responding to customer needs, and working closely with colleagues across our technical and commercial teams.

What You'll Be Doing:

You'll get hands-on experience working in the lab, developing your technical skills and directly supporting the team's product and quality goals.

Key tasks include:

Performing laboratory testing and analysis of gypsum and plaster materials using recognised standards

Preparing samples, running tests, and analysing data to draw meaningful conclusions on product performance

Supporting new product development and improvement of existing formulations using product development tools (training provided)

Generating substantiation data to support product claims and compliance with safety requirements

Assisting with root cause analysis for quality issues and customer complaints

Alongside the hands-on work, you'll also:

Provide technical customer support, handling sample requests, product queries, and resolving product quality complaints

Contribute to key business projects including specific work packages within the BLUEBIRD Tower project

Capture and document the voice of the customer, understanding requirements and feeding insights into product development

Support continuous improvement initiatives in lab standards, systems, and processes

Help maintain compliance by following all Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) policies and supporting risk assessments and safety plans

Communicate clearly and effectively across technical teams, commercial colleagues, and customers

What We're Looking For:

A current Undergraduate studying Chemistry, Materials Science, Process/Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline

Thorough and detail-driven work ethic

Ability to analyse data and draw meaningful conclusions

A teamwork mentality and ability to collaborate effectively

Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical personnel

Practical laboratory experience and scientific report writing skills are also a huge advantage

This is more than just a placement--it's your chance to gain valuable industry insight, build your technical skills, and make a tangible impact on the future of construction.

We are aiming to hold interviews the week commencing 28th July, followed by an on-site recruitment day on 7th August.
