About Us:
The
Technical Underwriting Team
are a key department within
Commercial Express
and has a range of responsibilities. They lead the way as to underwriting control and capabilities, reviewing our policy wording and looking at maintaining and managing our binders and capacity. Our technical team are key in supporting and managing various FCA and regulatory requirements we have as an MGA, through Binder Management, Product Governance, Fair Value and Consumer Duty. The team look at ways of developing and building processes that incorporate bespoke underwriting. This can be underwriting larger, more complex risks that sit outside our standard online model and have a problem-solving-centric approach.
The Role:
As a
Technical Specialist
at Commercial Express, you will play a pivotal role in enhancing the quality, clarity, and consistency of our suite of policy wordings while also delivering impactful technical training for underwriters.
Working closely with underwriting teams and multiple insurer partners, you'll ensure our wordings reflect best practice, align with regulatory expectations, and meet the evolving needs of our customers with common definitions and structure.
You will be a key technical referral point, collaborating with underwriting, legal, and product development teams to ensure our products are robust, compliant, and commercially effective.
You will contribute to and help shape the strategic underwriting direction, supporting the development of products and underwriting expertise through engaging training and guidance.

Skills and Experience:
Excellent market knowledge with a solid understanding of industry trends and dynamics.
Extensive experience in insurance policy wordings--preferably within commercial lines and MGA, Insurer or delegated authority environments, with a strong commercial mindset.
Proven background in designing and delivering technical training, coaching and developing teams.
Experience working across underwriting, product development, and legal/compliance teams.
Familiarity with underwriting systems, policy admin platforms, and digital trading environments.
Ability to manage multiple projects and workstreams simultaneously with excellent prioritising and organisational skills.
Expert knowledge of underwriting principles and practice with strong risk evaluation and technical skills.
Deep technical understanding of insurance wordings and contract structures.
Able to simplify complex legal or technical issues into practical solutions.
Confident communicator and presenter with strong stakeholder management skills.
Strong organisational and prioritisation skills--able to balance multiple projects simultaneously.
Enthusiastic about continuous learning and the professional development of others.
Experience with binding authority agreements and market reform contracts is an advantage.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work independently in a collaborative environment amidst changing priorities.
Strong knowledge of the regulatory and governance requirements within an MGA/ MGU business.
Proficient with documentation tools (e.g. Adobe Pro, MS Word) and comfortable working with digital platforms.
