About us

------------

UCL is one of the world's leading research universities, renowned for its innovative and impactful research. Rated second in the UK for 'Research Strength' in REF2021, UCL's Department of Biochemical Engineering (UCLBE) is the largest academic bioprocessing group globally. Our mission is to educate future leaders and drive research innovation to solve global health, food security, and climate change challenges, improving quality of life through our outstanding biochemical engineering programs.

Our research focuses on advanced biomanufacturing technologies critical to various bioindustry sectors, from biological medicines (proteins, cell and gene therapies, vaccines) to green industrial biotechnology (circular bioeconomy, biorefining, cultured meat). We are proud of our state-of-the-art facilities and strategic partnerships with leading academic institutions and industry consortia, which ensure our leadership in the field and foster continuous innovation and collaboration.

The laboratories in the Department of Biochemical Engineering contain an array of downstream processing and analytical equipment used across the department's research and teaching activities. This role sits within the department's Research and Facilities Team (RAFT), responsible for the effective management of our laboratories and equipment. RAFT plays a vital role in enabling high-quality research, delivering hands-on teaching, and supporting external collaborations. We are a collaborative, technically skilled team committed to maintaining a safe, efficient, and innovative working environment.

About the role

We are seeking a skilled and proactive individual to be responsible for the management of our downstream bioprocessing and analytical facilities. This includes overseeing a diverse range of equipment such as chromatography systems, filtration units, centrifuges, homogenisers, and analytical instruments (e.g., HPLC, GC, LCMS, particle sizing technologies).

The post holder will provide expert technical support to enable high-quality research, teaching, training, and external engagement activities, including contract research. They will play a key role in the ongoing development and optimisation of our bioprocessing and analytical capabilities, ensuring the facilities remain at the forefront of innovation and excellence.

About you

-------------

You will bring strong expertise in bioprocessing techniques and a thorough understanding of health and safety policies and procedures. Your advanced practical skills in operating and maintaining analytical and downstream processing equipment will be essential to the role.

We're looking for someone who is collaborative, solutions-focused, and committed to supporting a dynamic research and teaching environment. Experience in facility management within a bioprocessing context would be highly advantageous.
