Job Description

The MTC's mission is to provide its clients with engineering excellence, transforming the capabilities of industrial and government clients, and delivering a positive societal impact. Main Responsibilities include:



Technical Leadership

Technical leadership of project and/or work package portfolio up to ~1m, and of strategic initiatives To provide technical leadership, mentoring and coaching to other staff while undertaking training to progress your own career development. Demonstrate thought leadership in your field, consistently striving to grow your expertise and MTC's reputation, and a strong presence in critical thinking, challenging the status-quo, and able to drive quality and delivery of work to a consistently high level. Be a champion in continuous improvement in technical aspects of the MTC's project delivery capability including technical governance, behaviours, processes, structures, and tools.

Technology Management

Lead a capability area involving the development of a second level strategy that includes a strategic overview, roadmap, capability building plan, engagement plan, and skills plan. The strategy should identify routes to meeting the challenges identified by the Industrial Sectors' Roadmaps through innovation. To support the technology manager in the identification of new and novel net shape manufacturing processes for inclusion in projects or the team's technical strategy.

Product Development

Lead Proposal development & industrial engagement? Lead bid submissions to deliver CRD bids that support the development of products Co-ordinate timely proposal delivery to the industrial sectors. Support industrial sectors with technical sales activities. Build long term strategic mutually beneficial relationships with key members, clients, and government stakeholders for CRD opportunities. Support the definition of the standard products and offerings from within the Technology Group. Ensuring active engagement with the industrial sectors to understand future product requirements and support implementation and development plans for emerging products. Develop a pipeline of ideas ahead of relevant funding calls

Knowledge (Specific):

Developing and writing collaborative R&D, and industrial proposals. Building and maintaining a strong ideas hopper for future funding opportunities that aligns to the business strategy. Extensive knowledge in one or more of the key capabilities of Materials Technology: + HIP
+ Circular Materials
+ Sustainable Feedstocks
Experience in technical leadership of large programmes of work Understanding of the challenges in adopting specific technologies in a manufacturing business and their impact on return of investments. Collaborating with internal technical, project management, and business development teams Managing key customer / prospect relationships. Knowledge of the collaborative funding R&D funding landscape and bid management.


The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) was established in 2010 as an independent Research & Technology Organisation (RTO) with the objective of bridging the gap between academia and industry - often referred to as 'the valley of death'.


It represents one of the largest public sector investments in UK manufacturing and, after four years of planning and a 16 month build, the facility opened at Ansty Park in Coventry at the end of 2011.


In December 2011, there were 16 industrial members, 44 staff and just a few key pieces of equipment in the 'workshop'.


Over the following seven years the MTC's rapid growth has seen the expansion of our campus with the construction of three more facilities, including the opening of the Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre and the National Centre for Additive Manufacturing.


Our role has also increased to cover not only R&D but also Training, Advanced Manufacturing Management and Factory Design.


We now have over 700 talented employees working with us.


During this time we have helped hundreds of companies across a range of industries and over 100 of them have become members of the MTC.
