Overall Purpose of the Job

We are seeking an enthusiastic and proactive Senior Technical Specialist to join our dynamic technical operations team, which strives to provide a sector leading technical support for FSE and the wider University.

As the senior lead within the FSE DNP MAS NMR Platform, the Senior Technical Specialist will

  • Manage the UK DNP MAS NMR Facility at Manchester, which includes operation and maintenance of the equipment as well as providing support, guidance, and supervision for Facility users in all aspects of DNP MAS NMR spectroscopy.
  • Liaise with other Local Operation Groups (LOGs) from the UK DNP MAS NMR Facility as part of the Manchester LOG and advise the overseeing Facility Strategic Management Group and Scientific Advisory Board.
  • Perform DNP MAS NMR experiments on behalf of internal and external users and collaborators.
  • Liaise with other NMR spectroscopists at Manchester and take a leading role in support and guidance for users of instrumentation for NMR of solids.
  • Develop an independent research program.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Equipment & Operations
  • Oversee the daily operation of the Facility\'s Manchester 400 MHz DNP MAS NMR spectrometer.
  • Provide technical support, expert guidance, and supervision for Facility users with all aspects of DNP MAS NMR spectroscopy, including carrying out experiments and assisting with collaborative grant applications.
  • Administrate and further develop an internal and external user base.
  • Carry out promotional activities for the Facility, including reporting, as well as maintenance and updating of the associated website.
  • Assist Facility staff with provision of service and research NMR spectroscopy.
  • Keep instruments in working order, doing in-depth trouble shooting in collaboration with instrument manufacturers and other Platform staff.
  • Provide an outstanding level of professional expertise to the Faculty and University through highly developed specialist knowledge and skills.
  • Apply professional expertise to analyse, report and present complex data to internal and external audiences.
  • Take ownership for the continuous improvement in your own knowledge, experience and expertise, while freely sharing your knowledge and training others in your area(s) of specialism.
  • Initiate innovative solutions in your area of expertise to improve the service and build capability in alignment with current and future business need.
  • Guarantee an excellent and sustainable technical service and maximise cost recovery from research and other internal and external income streams within your area of specialism.
  • Proactively contribute to developments in your specialist field/area, internal and external to the university.
  • Represent FSE and/or your area of specialism on groups and committees, both internal and external to the University.
  • Develop positive and effective collaborative working relationships with all stakeholders at all levels of the organisation, and external to the University.
  • Provide expert specialist technical input which influences and helps drive the direction of research through the use of magnetic measurement techniques.
  • Plan and prioritise your own workload and those of any direct reports to best meet the service needs. Promote a culture of excellent customer service and embed a performance culture within the team.
  • Manage a budget.
  • Be responsive, agile and flexible based on service need across FSE i.e. learn new techniques and/or support other areas in the Faculty should the need arise.
  • Lead and champion change initiatives, manage experimental instrumentation and services comprising equipment and staff, and embed a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, consistency and innovation.
