Technology internship at The Positive Internet Company, including support for WordPress and general Linux platforms.
PLEASE SUBMIT A MESSAGE ALONG WITH YOUR APPLICATION THAT EXPLAINS YOUR INTEREST IN THE ROLE AND CONFIRMS YOUR AVAILABILITY
Applications which do not submit a cover note/message of this sort may not be considered. We also ask that candidates read the entire job posting.
This is a great opportunity for someone at the start of their career who wants to gain wide experience of all aspects of technology and customer support.
Positive focuses on GNU/Linux and Free & Open Source software like very few other organisations do. From many of the company's desktop machines through to all of our complex computing clusters, as well as in significant parts of Positive's networking stacks, our deep commitment to free and open source software shines through.
The Positive Internet Company has been providing managed services and hosting based on Free/Open Software for more than 20 years. We are very active in the technical community, as the founding Gold Sponsor of the Debian LTS project, long-time supporter of the UKUUG and other Unix and Linux user groups, and the Free Software Foundation.
We are also very active in the WordPress community and are recognised for our expertise in supporting this important platform.
We're a small, friendly team and pride ourselves on training and providing opportunities for development to all staff.
We have an internship available for those looking to build a career in Linux DevOps, sysadmin, and site/platforms reliability engineering.
Please note this is a paid internship (London Living Wage) for six months, subject to satisfactory performance review at the end of months one and three. It may be possible to continue after that date, in a part-time or full-time position, subject to agreement and other staffing arrangements.
Our internship programme has been running for two years and we are proud of the cohort of interns who have made a real mark in the company. Our fantastic intern alumni have shown that this a unique opportunity to gain meaningful experience of autonomous work.
Interviews will commence in central London from Friday 27th until the positions are filled; we are looking for successful candidates to start immediately.
Please ensure that you are available for interview in central London in the next days before submitting an application.
Applicants are asked to read the entire job posting and follow the application instructions at the bottom; we prefer applications sent as PDFs.
Again, due to the volume of applications we typically receive, we respectfully ask that candidates read the entire job specification and confirm their understanding of the role and that it is an internship rather than sending generic applications.
Candidates who send a brief cover note explaining their interest in the position and confirming their availability per the schedule above may receive preference.
About The Positive Internet Company
We're a successful tech company based in Soho with a technology facility in Cambridgeshire and a growing business in the United States.
We specialise in high-end web hosting and we're long-established (for our industry!) with interesting clients ranging from Stephen Fry and Ricky Gervais through the BBC, major banks and financial services firms to leading NGOs and charities.
About the role
We're currently looking for technology interns with an interest in Linux and open source technology.
No particular technology experience is necessary though you should have an interest in the Internet, web technologies, and platforms such as WordPress. Familiarity with Linux will be an advantage.
This role would suit someone looking to work in a friendly, and informal company rather than a more corporate environment.
We're a small team and everyone helps out across a range of areas.
Key responsibilities and opportunities of the role include: -
Work with the rest of the Positive team to support our customers, principally through our email ticketing system.
Gain production DevOps experience managing Apache, Nginx, Varnish, and other webserver/caching software.
Develop understanding of LAMP stack, primarily for php-based CMS-driven sites, especially WordPress and Magento.
Mentoring to learn about knowledge of managing Linux servers, both virtual and bare metal.
Configuration management using Ansible + version control using Git.
Database skills. Opportunities for hands-on experience managing and optimising performance of MySQL/MariaDB.
We won't be looking over your shoulder the whole time, so you should be motivated and organised. We are looking for someone with excellent English-- both oral and written.
You will also provide general support to your colleagues in the technology team.
Beyond basic computer skills and interest in web technologies, no special experience is necessary; the most important thing is enthusiasm to work hard as part of the team. That said, we especially welcome applications from those with some familiarity with Linux.
Our offices are just off Carnaby Street, right by the trendy Newburgh Quarter and with Soho on your doorstep. Nearest tube is Oxford Circus.
You'll be entitled to 25 days of paid annual leave (pro rata where appropriate) + Bank Holidays.
Further benefits include a company mobile phone and invitations to our regular events in London and beyond. There may be opportunities for international travel and professional development within the company if desired.
Standard hours are 9:30-5:30, Monday-Friday. It may be possible to offer some flexible working by special arrangement. There will be some weekend working on a rota basis.
Applicants must be available to start immediately.
The salary is London Living Wage (currently 13.85 per hour).
If you think you're the person we're looking for then click "apply" to the right of this job posting and send in your CV (PDF, please!) as an attachment and include a brief cover letter (entered in the text box on the application page) telling us why you'd like this job.
