Job Purpose

BMJ is seeking a Technology Lead to drive the technical design and delivery of its evidence-based clinical decision support products. In this pivotal role, you will lead the development of cutting-edge, evidence-based clinical decision support products powered by knowledge graphs, which have been curated by human experts. You'll play a crucial part in designing and implementing forward-thinking solutions which BMJ partners use to help transform healthcare delivery.

This position sits at the crossroads of data science, engineering, health informatics, and product strategy. We're looking for someone who not only understands how healthcare data is used by BMJ's healthtech partners, but who can also bridge the gap between complex technical concepts and practical solutions. You'll engage directly with both suppliers and partners, owning technical relationships and contributing to strategic conversations that shape the future of our product.

As BMJ's product suite continues to grow, you'll have the opportunity to define the long-term vision for the technology function, influence our roadmap, and build out a high-performing technical team. This is your chance to lead at the forefront of healthcare innovation, in a role that blends technical leadership with meaningful impact.

Key Responsibilities

Design, develop, and implement graph database solutions, which partners can use to address complex healthcare challenges, with a focus on evidence-based clinical decision support and population health analytics. Maintain solution architecture, including high-level data model design and integration with partner technical environments. Own the conceptual design of APIs, ensuring functionality, performance, scalability, information governance, and security. Provide technical support for partner and prospect pilots to facilitate successful solution evaluation and adoption. Collaborate closely with health informaticians, engineers, internal and partner tech teams, healthcare professionals, and suppliers to ensure solutions meet user needs and align with product goals. Stay up-to-date with developments in technical architecture, graph databases, and healthcare technology, applying new knowledge to improve solutions and internal processes. Support the Informatics, Data Science, and Product teams in scaling and optimising technical solutions. Communicate technical options and trade-offs clearly to stakeholders to support informed decision-making. Produce and maintain comprehensive technical documentation. Develop and update implementation plans and quality assurance steps to ensure successful delivery and deployment of BMJ products. Manage relationships with third-party development suppliers, ensuring alignment and accountability. Scope, define, and document technical integrations with external partners.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Health Informatics, or a related field; a Master's degree is preferred. Proven experience deploying solutions in healthcare environments, incorporating clinical safety and information governance for sensitive personal data. Hands-on experience implementing cloud-based healthcare solutions using AWS, Google Cloud Platform, or Microsoft Azure. Solid knowledge of healthcare data standards such as HL7, FHIR, and SNOMED-CT. Familiarity with the US healthcare environment and health IT services. Experience with agile development practices, container-based development, and DevOps methodologies. Expertise with property graph databases such as Neo4j and Amazon Neptune. Knowledge of Semantic Web standards including RDF, SKOS, OWL, and SPARQL. Experience working with RDF triple stores like Amazon Neptune, Apache Jena, or GraphDB. Strong programming skills, preferably in Python or Java. DevOps experience with an operational mindset, including tools such as Terraform and GitHub Actions. Excellent problem-solving skills with a creative and analytical approach. Proven ability to work effectively in project-driven, deliverable-based environments. * Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
