Job Description

The role will be responsible for working with the Optical Transmission team to audit the network proactively, capturing non-conformances and remediating where possible. The successful candidate will also be responsible for working with our NOC, Networks teams to implement projects works such as expansions or upgrades.


The role will also cover testing of new products, tools, documenting, and providing written reports and other feedback. Finally, the Telecommunication Fibre Engineer's role will include the provision of bespoke VIP and executive escalation response where more complex solutions are required to resolve an incident or problem. There is an on-call duty requirement.


Note: The role will cover our West region, which stretches from Plymouth to Birmingham, so there will be significant travel on occasions. Preferred location would be around the Gloucester area.


Key Accountability & Responsibilities




Strong transmission professional expertise and diversifying (or looking to) into electrical installation and air conditioning


Assist in the upkeep of the quality of the fibre optic network


Contribute to the development of network quality standards


Auditing of optical networks and civil engineering works


Improving the reliability of the network (analysing and preventing future failures from occurring)


Improving learning and understanding of the network (training and development of skills)


Develop new process, products and methods to reduce costs and maximise profits


Provide support for escalated cases in the field


Assist with the expansion of the network into new areas


On-call duty


Knowledge & Skills



The successful candidate will have a varied experience of previous fibre optic network builds and have worked in telecoms or related (e.g. utilities) with experience of building and testing fibre networks and writing technical and quality related documents. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate their skills and abilities for developing quality standards and reducing the failure rates of the network.


Essential skills


Development of network standards and quality/workmanship guidance documentation


Good knowledge of fibre optic telecommunications, both theoretical and practical, including splicing, closure build


Knowledge and experience of utilities working practices in the UK, including awareness of Streetworks and safe working practices


Written communication using standard office software (e.g. Microsoft Office, Visio)


Ability to work on their own initiative with little supervision or as part of a team


Electrical skillset beneficial


Desirable skills


Experience in delivering training and developing skills within your team


Electrical skillset beneficial DC (Direct current)


Ability to problem solve and to identify improvements with processes, tooling, and materials


Effective communication skills, able to clearly describe and discuss complex engineering challenges


Prior experience working in field operations roles


Prior experience in management of teams


Qualifications & Accreditations




Fibre optic qualifications such as City & Guilds accredited fibre optic splicing courses preferred


Electrical installation, Air conditioning such as City & Guilds accreditation preferred


Clean full UK driving licence


DBS check (or ability to pass)


NRSWA Chapter 8 Unit 2 (Signing, Lighting and Guarding), Unit 10 desirable
