Job Description

At Sheffield Forgemasters we have an exciting opportunity for a Test House Machinist to join our team, on a 6 months fixed term contract.


This role is based at our 64-acre site, sitting in the heart of Sheffield. Our Test House plays a key role in improving the quality, performance, and innovation of our products. It acts as a laboratory where different tests are conducted to develop new products, enhance existing ones, and ensure that our products meet specific standards and customer requirements. Typically, this involves material testing; product development; quality control; safety testing and machining.


As a Test House Machinist, you will be involved in all aspects of test sample preparation.

What you'll be doing

Light sawing test blocks to drawing / mark out. Manual Lathe and CNC Lathe machining of tensile test pieces. CNC Machining of Fracture Toughness Specimens. Milling of Charpy Impact Test Specimens. Preparation of Hardness and Metallography specimens. Collection of data. Operation of heat treatment furnaces.

About You

Apprentice Trained Machinist. Manual and CNC milling and turning experience. Experienced in test specimen machining. Health & Safety focused approach. Good understanding of imperial and metric measurements. Ability to read technical drawings. IT skills.

The Working Pattern

This is a full-time role working 37.5 hours per week, Monday - Friday, 7:45am - 4:00pm.

Successful candidates must undergo a criminal record check. Successful candidates must meet the security requirements before they can be appointed. People working with government / MOD assets must complete Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) checks.

These restrictions mean that factors such as your nationality, any nationalities you may have previously held, and your place of birth can restrict the roles you are eligible to perform within the organisation. All applicants must as a minimum achieve Baseline Personnel Security Standard. Many roles also require higher levels of National Security Vetting where applicants must typically have 5 - 10 years of continuous residency in the UK depending on the vetting level required for the role, to allow for meaningful security vetting checks.
