The Acorn is Penzance's vibrant home for live music and performing arts. From cutting-edge theatre to local community events, we host over 250 performances each year and offer a welcoming space for both emerging and established artists. Following a post-pandemic recovery period, we are thrilled to be rebuilding and reconnecting with our community.
The Role
We're looking for a friendly, highly organised, adaptable and flexible
Theatre Assistant
to become a key member of our small, committed team. This varied role combines administration, marketing, audience engagement, community outreach, and front-of-house support.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a passion for the arts and strong administrative and communication skills who thrives in a busy, collaborative environment.
Training will be provided.
What You'll Do
General Administration
Be the first point of contact for enquiries
Manage correspondence and support internal communications
Assist with meetings, events, and day-to-day operations
Premises Support
Maintain health & safety and fire checks
Keep up-to-date records (e.g., policies, risk assessments)
Monitor repairs, deliveries, and maintenance needs
Event & Volunteer Support
Help coordinate events and front-of-house activity
Manage volunteer rotas and assist with recruitment and training
Support volunteer and staff communications
Marketing & Audience Development
Help deliver our marketing strategy (social media, newsletters, website updates)
Use Mailchimp and WordPress to engage current and new audiences
Liaise with visiting performers, press, and advertisers
Fundraising & Community Outreach
Promote our Friends of The Acorn scheme and fundraising appeals
Assist with grant research and fundraising campaigns
Finance Admin
Process invoices and payments
Keep clear financial records using QuickBooks
Support bookkeeping and provide information for grant reporting
Other
Deputise for the Theatre Manager when needed
Champion The Acorn's policies on Health & Safety, the Environment, and Inclusion.
What We're Looking For
Essential
Strong written/verbal communication and interpersonal skills
Highly organised with great time management
Experience in a busy office environment
Confident with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)
Comfortable using social media for promotion
Calm under pressure, proactive, and positive
Interest in the arts and commitment to diversity and inclusion
Desirable
Experience in arts administration or project management
Familiarity with Mailchimp, WordPress, and QuickBooks
