An exciting opportunity has arisen at University Hospital Southampton Trust to undertake a level 6 apprenticeship in Therapeutic Radiography. You will be working as part of a multidisciplinary team treating patients with cancer using radiation in an innovative and ever developing field of healthcare. Southampton's Radiotherapy department is newly equipped with state-of-the-art treatment Linacs with Surface-Guided technology fitted on all of these.



This exciting role provides candidates with the opportunity to earn whilst you learn, gets hand on clinical practice as well as theory-based learning through Sheffield Hallam University.



The apprenticeship runs over 3 years, based in University Hospital Southampton's Radiotherapy department, and comprises of:



On the job training based within our pioneering radiotherapy department



Off the job training - following an integrated timetable with Sheffield Hallam University. The University course commences in March 2024; attendance will be mostly through distance learning although you will be expected to attend a few days on site at the University.



Completion of a BSc (Hons) degree in Therapeutic Radiography, approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)



The post is 37.5 hours per week Monday to Friday.

As part of the multi-disciplinary team, the post holder will fulfil a key role in providing radiotherapy, care and support to individuals as specified in standard radiotherapy protocols.



To perform a range of radiotherapy duties and procedures, as detailed in the apprenticeship programme, under the supervision of a qualified therapy radiographer



Entry requirements

The entry requirements ensure the apprenticeship is accessible to a diverse range of applicants while maintaining appropriate standards.

Applicants must:

meet the course entry requirements

GCSE (or equivalent)

Maths and English at level 2 or above (grade 4, or previously C).

If you don't have this yet, Sheffield Hallam University will refer you to their functional skills training partner where you'll need to complete the relevant qualifications during the first year of your apprenticeship.

If English is not your first language, you will also need an IELTS score of 6.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills, or equivalent. If your level of English language is below IELTS 6.5 we will recommend an appropriate pre-sessional English course which will allow you to achieve the required level of English.

Additional qualifications

Plus the following:

Evidence of successful formal study at Level 3 (A-level, international Baccalaureate diploma, level 3 national certificate, level 3 award, level 3 diploma, level 3 NVQ, T-LEVEL. A full list of level 3 qualifications is available on the Gov.uk website).



A minimum of six months experience in a health and social care capacity, including any placements or work-based learning undertaken as part of a Level 3 qualification.

If you do not have a minimum of six months experience working in a health and social care capacity, you should hold one of the following:



96 UCAS points from three A levels or equivalent qualifications such as BTEC Nationals, Cambridge Technicals, OCR Nationals and T Levels.



Access to HE Diploma from a QAA recognised Access to HE course



Level 3 Apprenticeship



Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQ's) New or existing Level 4 or 5 qualifications such as HNDs, Foundation Degrees, Certificate HE or Diploma HE



A previous degree

If you are already an NHS employee and are applying for an Apprentice - Annex 21 vacancy you may be entitled to pay protection.



Pay protection applies where the role you are applying for is at the same AFC band or higher, and you would receive less in pay compared with your current salary due to annex 21.

These roles are funded by the Government Apprenticeship Scheme and do not attract visa sponsorship.



You may be eligible if you have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least the previous 3 years.



You must also have permission from the UK government to live in the UK (not for educational purposes) or have obtained pre-settled or settled status under EU Settlement Scheme.
