Job Overview
Responsible for the efficient planning, scheduling, and coordination of daily vehicle routes for local distribution in the BH, DT, SO and SP postcode areas. This role ensures that all customer collections and deliveries are carried out safely, on time, and cost-effectively, while maintaining compliance with transport legislation and company standards.
The planner will work closely with drivers, the warehouse team, and customers to respond to changes in demand, optimize route efficiency, and provide a high level of customer service and bring the department to a position where it can be handed over to a colleague at 1130.
Key Responsibilities
Plan and organize daily routes for local collection vehicles, ensuring maximum efficiency.
Allocate drivers & vehicles based on workload, vehicle, driver availability, and operational priorities.
Monitor live activity, adjusting plans to accommodate traffic conditions, delays, or last-minute requests.
Liaise with customers regarding timings, special requirements, and any service updates.
Communicate clearly with drivers, providing accurate information, instructions, and support.
Use Transport Management Systems (TMS) and vehicle tracking software to plan routes
Ensure compliance with driver hours, and all relevant transport regulations.
Work with the warehouse teams to coordinate vehicle loading and unloading sequences efficiently.
Support the Transport Manager cost control, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Address customer issues promptly & professionally, maintaining service quality and client satisfaction.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential:
Previous experience in transport planning, ideally within a local or regional delivery operation.
Strong knowledge of local road networks and current UK transport legislation/
Proficiency in transport or route planning software
Excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills.
Ability to make quick, informed decisions in a fast-paced environment.
Desirable:
CPC in Road Haulage Operations or working toward certification.
Experience in managing multi-drop or time-sensitive delivery operations.
IT proficiency, including MS Excel and transport management databases.
