Job Description

BCPS Microbiology is has an opportunity to become a Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered Biomedical Scientist. To train and perform technical and scientific investigations across both bacteriology and virology as required by the service under the supervision of HCPC registered BMS team.
Main duties of the job
Biomedical Scientists are responsible for analysing samples to aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of infection and disease by the application of automated, semi-automated and manual techniques.
Diagnostic tests include examination of blood, serum, plasma, urine, faeces, screening swabs and respiratory secretions. Investigations include for example, urine microscopy and culture, culture for Mycobacterium sp., screening for MRSA and molecular detection of Chlamydia and Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
Biomedical Scientists are expected to work their core contracted hours within the 24 hour working arrangements in accordance with Agenda for Change.
Trainee BMS's rotate between all sections of Microbiology under the direct supervision of HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists with the aim of gaining knowledge and practical skills in all aspects of clinical Microbiology. The overall aim is to gain registration with the HCPC by completion of the IBMS/HCPC Registration portfolio during their training period.
BMS staff are required to maintain their competency in all areas of their duties. Aspects of individual involvement may alter as competencies evolve over time.
All members of staff are required to embed clinical governance into all aspects of their work to ensure that the quality of systems and performance operate to the highest standard and to correct defects in personal performance and adhere to system improvements as amendments are made/required.
