At Sheffield Forgemasters we have an exciting opportunity for a Trainee Crane Driver to join our team.


This role is based at our 64-acre site, sitting in the heart of Sheffield. Our Machine Shops offer rough machining and finish machining to exacting tolerances, including complex shapes such as reactor heads for nuclear applications. The department hosts a vast array of milling, turning, boring and finishing machinery including the UK's largest Vertical Turning Lathe and Horizontal Floor Borer.


As a Trainee Crane Driver, you will develop the relevant crane driving and slinging skills to be able to work independently on all cranes within the departments and safely carry out all lifting associated tasks independently.

What you'll be doing

Developing crane driving and slinging skills to work independently across all cranes in the department. Safely carrying out lifting operations in compliance with procedures and legislation. Completing internal training programs within specified timeframes (IOSH, slinging, crane driving, confined spaces, working at height, MEWP, 6S, 5 wastes, Yellow Belt CI). Assessments on crane operation in NMS, SMS, South Planer, and Harsco Garage. Contributing to general housekeeping practices, including operating sweepers and managing machine waste.

About You

Ideally hold 3 GCSEs (grades 4-9) Good understanding of Health & Safety practices. Able to follow safety procedures and meet deadlines. Willing and able to undertake shift work. Good communication skills. Organised, self-motivated, flexible, and able to work using your own initiative. Demonstrates strong time management and a willingness to learn.

The Working Pattern

This is a full-time role working 37.5 hours per week.

Mornings - 6am - 1pm (Mon - Fri) Afternoons 1pm - 8pm (Mon-Thur) 1pm -10pm(Friday only) Nights - 8pm - 6am (Mon-Thursday)

These restrictions mean that factors such as your nationality, any nationalities you may have previously held, and your place of birth can restrict the roles you are eligible to perform within the organisation. All applicants must as a minimum achieve Baseline Personnel Security Standard. Many roles also require higher levels of National Security Vetting where applicants must typically have 5 - 10 years of continuous residency in the UK depending on the vetting level required for the role, to allow for meaningful security vetting checks.
