An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and driven trainee to join our team whilst completing the ETP (Echo Training Programme).



A trainee echocardiographer assists in the diagnostic process by performing echocardiograms (ultrasound scans of the heart) under supervision, learning the necessary technical and clinical skills to eventually carry out these procedures independently.



This is a training role, and as such the main responsibilities are achieving competency in Echocardiography

The post holder will follow a structured training plan to meet both with clearly defined targets, expectations and regular assessments to complete British Society of Echocardiography Accreditation



The successful applicant must be in a position to commence this programme from September 2025.

Main responsibilities include:

Learning to Conduct Echocardiograms :

A trainee echocardiographer works closely with qualified professionals and Newcastle University to learn how to perform echocardiograms on patients. This involves positioning the patient correctly, using the ultrasound equipment, and obtaining high-quality images of the heart.

Interpreting Results :

Over time, following a training plan and competency framework, they'll gain the skills to assess and analyse these images.

Patient Interaction :

They help prepare patients for the procedure, explaining the process, ensuring patient comfort, and addressing any concerns.

Maintenance of Equipment :

Ensuring the ultrasound equipment is properly maintained and cleaned.

Record Keeping :

Trainees learn how to document patient information, test results, and any relevant observations in patient records, maintaining confidentiality and adhering to healthcare regulations.

Collaboration with Healthcare Teams :

They work as part of a multidisciplinary team, collaborating with cardiologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide the best care for patients, contributing to the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac conditions.



In this role, trainees typically undergo a combination of on-the-job training, classroom instruction, and practical exams as they progress towards becoming fully qualified echocardiographers.



We manage three major locality hospitals at North Tyneside, Wansbeck and Hexham, plus a number of smaller community hospitals and clinics from Tynemouth to Berwick on Tweed, in addition to our state-of-the-art Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital, the first of its kind in England. We also care for people in their homes and provide services from facilities in local communities such as health centres. We give people greater choice and control over their care to help them to live independently at home and avoid hospital admission where appropriate. A trainee echocardiographer is responsible for learning to perform and assist in echocardiograms (ultrasound scans of the heart) under supervision, developing both technical and clinical skills. Their key responsibilities include:

Performing Echocardiograms :

Trainees assist in operating ultrasound equipment to capture high-quality images of the heart. They learn how to position patients for various types of scans, ensuring clear views of the heart's structure and function.

Patient Interaction :

They help prepare patients by explaining the procedure, addressing concerns, and ensuring patient comfort. Trainees also take relevant medical histories, such as previous cardiac conditions or symptoms, to guide the scanning process.

Image Capture and Quality Control :

Trainees focus on obtaining clear and accurate images of the heart's chambers, valves, and blood flow. They are taught to ensure proper image quality, which is vital for an accurate diagnosis.

Interpretation of Results :

While initially under supervision, they begin to identify important features in echocardiograms, such as abnormal heart valves or fluid around the heart. As they progress, they develop the ability to interpret findings, contributing to the diagnostic process.

Documentation and Record Keeping :

Trainees maintain accurate patient records, documenting the procedure, findings, and any relevant observations. They also ensure that echocardiogram equipment is properly cleaned and maintained.

Collaboration with Healthcare Teams :

They work alongside cardiologists, nurses, and other professionals, ensuring the patient's care is well coordinated. Trainees contribute to patient treatment plans by providing echocardiogram results for further evaluation.

Ongoing Training and Professional Development :

Trainees undergo both practical and theoretical training to deepen their knowledge of cardiac anatomy and echocardiographic techniques. They receive feedback from senior staff to improve their skills.

Adhering to Health and Safety Protocols :

Maintaining a clean and safe working environment is essential. Trainees follow infection control guidelines and ensure patient confidentiality.



As experience in gained, trainees gradually take on more complex tasks and work towards becoming fully qualified echocardiographers over the 18 month programme. A strong commitment to self directed learning is essential in order to meet the requirements of the programme and ultimately gain BSE accreditation and PgCert in Echocardiography.
