Trainee Greenkeeper

Reporting To



Head Greenkeeper

The Role



As a Trainee Greenkeeper, you will receive training to perform routine course maintenance and contribute to the overall presentation and health of the golf course. The role involves physical work, attention to detail, and commitment to health and safety standards.

Responsibility & Duties



Carry out routine golf course maintenance



o Mow and maintain greens, tees, fairways, surrounds, and roughs to a high standard.

o Maintain bunkers, gardens, and surrounds, including the repair and renovation of worn or damaged turf.

o Assist with course setup tasks such as changing hole positions, moving tee markers, and marking hazards and out-of-bounds areas.

o Apply fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides following safety procedures.

o Control pests, weeds, and diseases to ensure healthy turf.

o Assist with irrigation duties and watering, as required.

o Undertake planting, pruning, and tree work under supervision.

o Perform all tasks to a high standard at all times.

Machinery & Equipment



o Prepare and maintain machinery and tools, ensuring they are clean, safe, and in working order.

o Report machinery/ equipment defects or damage immediately.

o Perform all relevant pre-start checks prior to use of any machinery or equipment.

Compliance & Communication



o Maintain Health & Safety and work within the Club's policy at all times.

o Maintain PC based work, machinery and fuel records.

o Ensure that all work areas both on and off the course are left clean, tidy, and well presented at all times.

o Read, understand and then sign all relevant risk assessments before undertaking any task.

o Take action to remedy any condition or damage found on the course which affects the high standard expected, or report as necessary.

Person Specification



Essential Qualities:



o Reliable and physically fit with good stamina.

o Ability to work efficiently both alone and as part of a team.

o Good communication skills.

o Enthusiasm for outdoor work and development within the greenkeeping industry.

Desirable Attributes:



o Knowledge of golf course maintenance or horticulture.

o Previous experience in landscaping or similar outdoor roles.

o An interest in golf or the turf management industry.

o Valid UK driving license.

Working Hours



o 37.5 hours per week.

o Working hours including a 30-minute unpaid break: April to September, 6:00 am - 2:30 pm; October to March, 7:00 am - 2:30 pm.

o Occasionally it will be necessary to work in addition to these hours as required by the needs of the business. Any overtime will be accrued and taken as time off in Lieu.

o Weekend overtime will be required on a rota basis, approximately every third week, with several additional shifts as required by the needs of the Club. The normal weekend shift, paid at time and a half, would be 3 hours on both Saturday and Sunday mornings starting at a time as directed by the Head Greenkeeper, to prepare the course for the days golf.
