Main Responsibilities
As a trainee HCA, you'll learn key skills, such as:
Clinical Duties:
Perform routine clinical tasks such as:
- Measuring and recording vital signs (BP, pulse, temperature, oxygen saturation)
- Conducting ECGs, urine dipstick tests, and blood glucose monitoring
- Assisting with blood tests and phlebotomy (if trained and experienced)
- Chaperoning patients during examinations and procedures
- Assisting with minor surgery and IUD procedures
- Ensure clinical specimens are correctly processed and sent
- Ensure clinical waste (including sharps bins) collection runs smoothly, reporting any issues to the Practice Manager.
Provide support to clinical practitioners during consultations and clinics
Maintain accurate patient records on the practice system
Prepare and clean clinical rooms, ensuring infection control standards are met
Restock clinical areas and consulting rooms including equipment and PPE
Manage stock levels for clinical supplies and assist with orders as needed
Attend and participate in any appropriate practice meetings when required
Any other delegated duties appropriate to the post
Administrative Duties:
Welcome patients and support them with queries in person, over email and by phone
Manage appointment bookings and recalls using the practice's clinical system
Ensure patient records are up-to-date, and filed correctly
Assist with the processing of test results, prescriptions, and referrals
Liaise with external providers (labs, hospitals, private specialists)
Requirements:
Experience:
Previous experience as an HCA in a GP surgery, primary care or hospital setting (
Desirable but full training will be provided
)
Chaperone training/experience in assisting minor surgical procedures (
Desirable)
Experience with clinical database systems (
Desirable)
Qualifications:
GCSE English and Maths, or equivalent (
Essential)
NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent (
Desirable)
Phlebotomy or wound care training desirable (
Desirable)
