Job overview

This is an exciting development opportunity for a motivated and experienced registered nurse to train as a Nurse Hysteroscopist within the Gynaecology Department at ESTH. The role supports the Trust's commitment to expanding nurse-led services and improving access to outpatient diagnostic and therapeutic hysteroscopy.

The post holder will be expected to complete their training within 18-24 months, ensuring accountability and providing a clear developmental trajectory. You will undertake a structured training programme, supported by senior medical and nursing staff, leading to independent practice in outpatient hysteroscopy procedures, including diagnostic hysteroscopy, polypectomy, and endometrial biopsy.

Main duties of the job

The Band 6 Trainee Hysteroscopist Nurse will be responsible for delivering safe, evidence-based outpatient hysteroscopy services under supervision, which includes preparing and assessing patients for diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy procedures, obtaining informed consent, performing hysteroscopic examinations and minor interventions such as endometrial biopsies and polypectomies within agreed competency levels, ensuring accurate documentation and timely communication of findings to the multidisciplinary team, managing patient care throughout the procedure including monitoring vital signs and responding to complications, adhering to infection prevention and control standards, maintaining a sterile environment, supporting the implementation of local and national clinical guidelines, participating in audit and quality improvement initiatives to enhance service delivery, educating and reassuring patients about procedures and aftercare, collaborating with consultants, nurses, and administrative staff to optimise clinic flow and patient experience, demonstrating leadership in promoting best practice and patient safety, engaging in continuous professional development through formal training and supervised practice to achieve hysteroscopy accreditation.

Working for our organisation

St George's, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals and Health Group cares for a population of four million people in South West London and North East Surrey. Our sites include St George's Hospital, one of 11 major trauma centres in the UK and the largest healthcare provider and major teaching hospital in the area; St Helier Hospital, home to the South West Thames Renal and Transplantation Unit and Queen Mary's Hospital for Children; and Epsom Hospital, home to the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC).

After years of collaboration, our two Trusts became a hospitals group in 2021. While remaining as two separate Trusts, being a hospitals group will help us to collaborate more closely on research, and the development, education, and training of our 17,000-strong workforce.

At gesh we are committed to supporting flexible working arrangements. Applicants are encouraged to discuss any flexibility they may need during the recruitment process.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Band 6 Trainee Nurse Hysteroscopist role is a developmental position within the Gynaecology Outpatient Department designed to enable an experienced registered nurse to undertake accredited training in diagnostic and therapeutic hysteroscopy in accordance with British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy standards, progressing towards independent practice as a Nurse Hysteroscopist, and involves working under supervision to deliver safe, evidence-based care to women referred for outpatient hysteroscopy procedures such as endometrial biopsies, polypectomy and management of abnormal uterine bleeding, while providing holistic support throughout the diagnostic and treatment pathway, maintaining accurate documentation, and ensuring adherence to Trust and national clinical guidelines; the post holder will manage a supervised caseload, perform patient assessments, take detailed histories, explain procedures and findings, and involve patients in shared decision-making, while acting as an advocate and key contact for women and their families, collaborating closely with consultants, cancer nurse specialists, and the multidisciplinary team to ensure seamless service delivery; additional responsibilities include participating in clinical governance, audit, research, and service development projects, contributing to health promotion and patient education, supporting departmental resource management, and undertaking specific projects as directed by senior staff; the trainee will be expected to demonstrate commitment to personal development through completion of a formal university-based hysteroscopy training programme, competency assessments, and revalidation requirements, while keeping abreast of current trends and best practice in gynaecological endoscopy; the role also encompasses ensuring compliance with health and safety policies, risk assessments, and incident reporting, safeguarding patient confidentiality, and promoting a culture of continuous improvement and compassionate care aligned with organisational values; upon successful completion of training and competency sign-off, the post holder will progress to Band 7 and deliver autonomous nurse-led hysteroscopy clinics, providing expert assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care, and contributing to the ongoing development of innovative outpatient services that enhance patient experience and clinical outcomes within the framework of national standards and local protocols.
