Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a trainee optical assistant in our busy optical practice in the centre of Harpenden.

No experience is necessary as we are looking to train someone and sponsor them through their education to become a senior optical assistant, with further progression available for the right candidate.

Working hours:



Monday, Tuesday 9-5.30

Saturday 9-4

Duties will include:



Learning about all aspects of patient care, including dispensing, adjusting, fitting and repairing spectacles All other administration and reception duties performed by an optical assistant, including booking appointments, recalling patients, updating patient files and sending referrals Providing an exceptional and unrivalled level of care and customer service for our patients who are at the heart of everything we do

Qualifications:



The successful candidate will be enrolled into the Association of British Dispensing Opticians Optical Assistant course.

This course is to be completed through distance learning alongside their weekly coursework submission which the candidate will be expected to complete in their own time.

The candidate will need to attain a 70% mark across all coursework over a period of 26 weeks. There is also a compulsory practical skills day in Birmingham which the candidate will be expected to attend during their first course.

Upon successful completion of this course, the candidate will then be enrolled into the Senior Optical Assistant course. This course will be completed via distance learning and coursework submission over a period of 32 weeks with a break for Christmas. The candidate will be required to attend a practical skills workshop in Birmingham. The candidate will be required to sit both a theory and practical exam in order to pass this final course.

The candidate is expected to dedicate at least 6-8 hours of their time to study and complete their weekly coursework.

Full support will be provided in practice to aid the candidate in obtaining their qualifications.

The ideal candidate will

:

have an A-C (or 4-9) GCSE in Maths (optics is heavily maths-based and so a good understanding of maths is required for entry to the optical courses)
have a keen eye for detail with exemplary organisational skills work using their initiative and pre-empt and resolve issues before they arise be professional and approachable
