An exciting training opportunity has arisen within our Urgent Treatment Centres for 2 suitably experienced clinicians to join us as Trainee Urgent Care Practitioners (tUCP).

This role is an opportunity for individuals wishing to expand their scope of practice & develop into autonomous practitioners, becoming competent in assessing, diagnosing, & treating patients.



The successful applicant will be supported to complete the relevant course(s) required which will include Level 7 minor injuries & Level 7 minor illness course

or

PgCert in Urgent Care at Huddersfield University.

The successful applicant will commence the academic element in Jan 26.

Prior to applying for this position please ensure you are able to fulfil the University entry requirements:


Applicants must currently work in a health or social care setting. Be registered with a relevant statutory body such as the NMC or HCPC. An Honours degree (2:2 or above) or an equivalent professional qualification appropriate to that of the proposed programme to be followed.

Locations

: Successful applicants will need to travel to various sites in order to fulfil training requirements, this includes Wharfedale, Leeds & Wakefield

Hours

: 37.5 per week, predominantly worked Mon to Fri 08.00-18.00 during training



On successful completion candidates will be expected to transition to a substantive position as an autonomous clinician within LCD. With a requirement to take at least of 50% of hours at Wharfedale

Main duties of the job

The role encompasses treating adult & paediatric patients who self-present or are streamed to the UTC with a variety of minor injuries/illness. As a trainee, the successful candidates will work under the direct supervision of the UCP clinical educator & experienced practitioners (ENP, EP, UCP & ACP) to provide complete care ensuring the safe & effective management of patients, inc assessment, diagnosis, treatment & discharge.



You must be an innovative & hardworking individual with a broad range of skills & experience in emergency & / or urgent care.



You must be able to demonstrate:


Excellent leadership & management skills Willingness to learn & develop Hold a professional registration Have a minimum of 3 years post registration experience in an emergency or urgent care setting with exposure to a wide variety of patients with urgent care needs

The successful candidates will be required to complete the LCD sponsorship agreement form, this will be discussed at interview

Covid19 double vaccination not required but recommended. This job has been rated as Medium Risk for requiring Hepatitis B immunisation vaccination is recommended, therefore Post Holders will be offered a Hep B immunisation. Flu jab recommended and will be offered.

Job Purpose:

The post holder will be a Paramedic or Nurse with post graduate qualifications & clinical experience relevant to the position. They will act within their professional boundaries & will provide care for the patient from initial history taking, clinical assessment, diagnosis & treatment to discharge or onwards referral.This may take place over the telephone, in a clinic or in the patients home.



The post holder will demonstrate safe, clinical decision-making & expert care for patients, work only within their scope of clinical competence. They will be required to work flexibly to meet service demand.



The post holder will undertake the relevant courses required to fulfil the training post. The course of choice will be the Minor injuries course at Huddersfield University in January 2026 & the minor illness course in September 2026. They will need to evidence they meet the course requirements,

confirmation of job offer will be based on acceptance onto the course.

The post holder will work as a trainee under the supervision of an experienced ENP/EP/ANP/UCP Clinical Educator to provide complete care, ensuring safe & effective management of patients.



You will be supported to achieve the qualifications, however dedication & commitment will be required on your part.



Following successful qualification on approved courses & completion of the Local Care Direct UCP Competency Framework the post holder will autonomously undertake assessment & treatment of patients in the UTC / Walk in Centre. These patients may present with complex &/or acute/chronic illness and or injury: to determine clinical diagnosis, treatment & refer/discharge as indicated.

KEY PRINCIPLES

Clinical

Independently prioritise, assess, treat, & safely discharge/refer patients with undifferentiated & undiagnosed primary/urgent health care problems by making use of skills in history taking, physical examination, problem-solving & clinical decision making, to establish a diagnosis & management plan. Provide assessment, treatment & diagnosis at the point of contact which may be in a variety of clinical or non-clinical settings. Make professionally autonomous decisions for which the post holder is accountable. Only work within the clinical competencies and scope of practice of the individual UCP maintaining a positive approach to patient care and experience whilst recognising limitations of the UCP role. Complete and maintain accurate, contemporaneous records which include the documentation of the presenting history, past medical history, medications, allergies, examination findings, differential diagnosis and management plan and appropriate safety netting. Adhere to Medicines management policy & procedures. Independently triage & interpret call information, accessed directly on SystmOne in a timely & professional manner to the patient or carer. Act as a referral agent & care co-ordinator by establishing multi-agency collaboration across the primary/secondary interface to meet the needs of the patient. Work within the parameters of current prescribing legislation or approved Patient Group Directives. If working in the MIU Urgent Treatment Centre environment, be IMER trained & competent in the interpretation of adult & paediatric limb x rays to aid diagnosis of musculoskeletal injuries. Provide professional & clinical advice within the multi-disciplinary team. Discuss patients continuing care with GP/ senior clinician if required. Work within the Code of Professional Conduct or guidelines of relevant professional body e.g. NMC, College of Paramedics, and Health & Care Professions council.

Research and Quality

Demonstrate evidence based care, working within agreed guidelines and protocols. Take an active role in research studies within the policy framework of the organisation. Participate in audit, data collection and activity monitoring to improve performance and inform future service development.

Management

Actively promote integrated working in collaboration with other health care professionals both within and outside the LCD organisation. Contribute to the development, implementation, review and evaluation of clinical protocols. Ensure effective communication, participating in meetings and liaising with other professionals, services and agencies as required. Maintain personal and professional development through evidence of continuous professional development (CPD), including demonstrating a personal awareness of advisory papers and current national issues that may have a local impact for the service. Participate in development of the Urgent Care Practitioner roles and other healthcare professionals though teaching, mentoring and assessment; this will include the provision of evidence based healthcare advice which contributes to the diagnosis, care or treatment of a wide range of clinical conditions. Actively participate in the mentoring of colleagues and participate in the delivery of internal training material. Effectively manage the safeguarding of adults, children, young people and refer appropriately.

Professional and Educational

To work within the professional Code of Conduct and other directives as defined by the HCPC and NMC. To undertake appropriate personal and professional development to meet the requirements of HCPC and NMC registration. Develop own skills and competencies through education, training and development activities related to the current and future demands of the role opportunities and where possible achieve Independent Prescriber status. Completion of Urgent Care Practitioner course (level 7) or completion of minor injuries/minor illness training at level 6/7 where the course is accredited and of at least 3 months duration Complete the LCD Urgent Care Practitioner 3-month probationary training and identify areas of further education/skills required. Completion of required courses and UCP competency framework is required within 12 months of commencement of training post. Observe and participate in all areas of clinical practice including telephone assessment, face to face and home visits and work flexibly to meet demand on the day. Understand and observe professional and national guidelines on confidentiality. Comply with the corporate governance structure in keeping with the principles and standards set by the organisation. Ensure clinical supervision needs are met. Participate in teaching and mentoring other health professionals and members of the multi-disciplinary team.

COMMUNICATIONS & RELATIONSHIPS

To ensure agreed lines of communication and reporting are implemented within the team to support all employees understanding LCD business plans, objectives, priorities and changes. To promote effective cross-functional working and that the operational team supports the achievement of objectives, standards and protocols of other LCD areas. To attend internal and external meetings representing LCD and engaging in discussions appropriate to the role and level of the post.

TRAINING

To complete the defined company induction programme and core training for this role and mandatory refresher training there after and ensure that accurate records of training are maintained.
