Job Purpose
The
Transport Operations Manager
will take overall responsibility for the
planning, coordination, and management of all transport operations
across the company.
This is a
key managerial and supervisory role
, ensuring that all haulage and logistics activities are executed safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with legal and operational standards. The postholder will manage depot operations, oversee drivers and fleet utilisation, liaise with clients, and continuously improve service quality and operational performance.
Responsibilities
Plan, direct, and coordinate day-to-day
transport and distribution operations
, ensuring the effective movement of goods and vehicles.
Oversee all operational functions including route planning, load allocation, dispatch, and delivery performance.
Supervise and manage a team of
drivers, planners, depot staff, and administrative personnel
, ensuring high performance and compliance with company standards.
Ensure full compliance with
DVSA
,
Operator's Licence
,
Health & Safety
, and
Tachograph/Driver Hours
regulations.
Oversee the maintenance, inspection, and repair schedule of all fleet vehicles, ensuring roadworthiness and legal compliance.
Manage and monitor fuel usage, vehicle efficiency, and cost controls to maintain profitability.
Prepare and monitor operational budgets, performance indicators, and management reports.
Lead and develop staff through effective training, supervision, and performance reviews.
Implement and monitor operational policies and procedures that support safe, compliant, and efficient haulage operations.
Investigate accidents, incidents, and non-compliance events; take corrective and preventive actions.
Liaise with clients to coordinate delivery schedules, manage expectations, and ensure service quality.
Manage relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, and regulatory bodies.
Drive continuous improvement across all transport activities through data analysis and process optimisation.
Ensure that all documentation (delivery notes, vehicle records, compliance files, licences) is accurate and up to date.
Represent the company in audits, inspections, and meetings with authorities such as the
Traffic Commissioner
or
DVSA
when required.
Essential Skills and Experience
Minimum
1-2 years of experience
in a transport, logistics, or haulage management role.
Strong understanding of
UK road transport legislation
,
Operator's Licence
obligations, and
DVSA
compliance requirements.
Proven experience supervising and managing teams in a logistics or transport setting.
Excellent organisational and planning abilities, with strong attention to detail.
Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to motivate staff and handle performance issues effectively.
Proficiency in
transport management systems (TMS)
, telematics, and vehicle tracking software.
Experience managing budgets, analysing KPIs, and reporting on operational performance.
Effective problem-solving and decision-making skills under pressure.
A valid
UK driving licence

Desirable (Preferred) Requirements
CPC in Road Haulage Operations
(National or International).
Qualification in
Transport Management, Logistics, Supply Chain, or Business Administration
(Level 4-6 or equivalent).
Experience managing
multi-site operations
, large fleets, or specialised haulage (ADR, refrigerated, oversized loads, etc.).
Knowledge of sustainability, fuel efficiency, and carbon-reduction initiatives in transport.
