Main Duties



Providing relational, trauma-informed therapeutic support to children and young people. Contributing to therapeutic care planning and review processes. Supporting staff in embedding trauma-informed practices through consultation, reflection, and coaching. Advocating for the voice, rights, and long-term wellbeing of young people within and beyond the residential setting. Using sensory, relational, and attachment-based approaches to help young people co-regulate, build trust, and develop resilience. This is a role for a practitioner who brings empathy, curiosity and deep commitment to healing relationships--and who understands that meaningful change begins with feeling safe, seen, and supported Together with other team members to share the responsibility for the day to day care and supervision of children within the home, which may include assisting the primary and/or key worker with responsibility for one or more children. Undertake shift co-ordinator responsibilities as per rota requirements Ensure that appropriate records are maintained, particularly those detailing observations and/or assessment of each child, in accordance with statutory requirements agreed and with reference to policy and procedures. Engage with the psychologist and other professionals in formulating, implementing and progressing therapeutic intervention and well-being plans for individual young people living in the home. This includes participation in therapeutic meetings and ensuring that there is an accurate record of these meetings. Keep in contact with parents/carers, educational facilities and as appropriate, other professional staff, regarding the needs of the Children. Develop working relationships with other agencies to support the needs of the children living in Tearmann Cottage e.g. education. And to establish contact with the local community, which would facilitate the involvement of the young people in outside activities. Participate in staff meetings, consultations, group discussions, reflective practice and formal supervision as required. To contribute to the multi-disciplinary assessment of children's needs, by planning, implementing, evaluating and reviewing individual care plans designed to meet such needs, prepare reports and participate in meetings regarding the young people. To foster a culture and ethos within the home in which the needs of children are paramount and which provides them with security, safety, care and education, enabling them to meet their full potential To be sensitive to the needs of individual children, taking account of race, culture, language and religion. This includes accompanying young people when necessary to places of worship, holidays, outings, and on other relevant occasions. To help facilitate regular children's meetings to obtain the views of children to enhance the care environment, and to ensure that positive responses are made to children's complaints in accordance with Tearmann Cares policy and procedure. Administer medication, drugs and first aid in accordance with the Tearmann care policy. Develop appropriate relationships which will promote the growth and development of the young people. To complete delegated tasks for the home at the discretion of the Team Leader as required. Appropriately support and care for the young people in a crisis or significant event. This will require relevant knowledge, skills and values including emotional intelligence and resilience as per Therapeutic Crisis Intervention model, Sensory attachment intervention and the Northern Ireland Framework for Integrated Therapeutic Care. Care staff will receive ongoing training and assessment in these models, relevant to their role. Ensure that environmental safety is maintained, which may include completing checks within the immediate home and responding to any alerts by safety / security systems. Engage in, participate or lead (as required) handovers both at the beginning of the working shift and as other staff join the shift, to ensure that effective communication and a team approach in the care of the young person is maintained. Ensure a working knowledge of all Risk Assessments and Individual Crisis Support Plans for each young person in the home, update risk assessments / ICSP's / daily records as required and contribute to Risk Assessments for young people Ensure appropriate action to identify, manage and report risk to maintain safety of young people, themselves and others according to Regional and Tearmann Care Safeguarding procedures. All safeguarding events must be reported to the appropriate personnel. Contribute to the daily life of the home through engaging with the young people in activities such as housework, maintenance of clothing, cooking and promoting personal care. Assist with the supervision and purchase of clothing for young people, the care of furnishings and household equipment and undertake household and domestic duties which are appropriate to meet the care needs of the young people. Undertake duties in connection with the proper receipt, recording and safe custody of monies for the home Participate in and contribute to training programs when appropriate. The role is contingent upon successful completion of all mandatory training as outlined by the Tearmann and RQIA Minimum Standards. A All staff must attend training and pass to the expected standards as required for the role. Commitment to flexible working hours as the job will include evening, sleep-in duties, weekend shifts. Adhere to Tearmann Care policies and procedures in carrying out duties. Any other duties appropriate to the grade as may be required by the Tearmann Care. Ensure the Tearmann Care policy on equality of opportunity is promoted through his/her own actions and those of any staff for whom he/she has responsibility. Co-operate fully with the implementation of the Tearmann Care Health and Safety arrangements, reporting any accidents/incidents/equipment defects to his/her manager, and maintaining a clean, uncluttered and safe environment for patients/clients, members of the public and staff. Adhere at all times to the Tearmann Care policies/codes of conduct, including for example: Smoke Free policy IT Security Policy and Code of Conduct standards of attendance, appearance and behaviour Contribute to ensuring the highest standards of environmental cleanliness within your designated area of work. Co-operate fully with the Tearmann Care policies and procedures relating to infection prevention and control. Take responsibility for his/her own ongoing learning and development, in order to maximise his/her potential and continue to meet the demands of the post and the responsibilities and requirements of registration with NISCC. Adhere to the Tearmann Care commitment of providing the highest possible standard of service to children in our care and their families, by treating all those with whom he/she comes into contact in the course of work, in a pleasant, courteous and respectful manner.

Qualifications/Experience



Degree in a relevant care related subject i.e. Youth work, social care plus 1 year experience working with young people aged 6-15

Or



HNC/D in a care related subject plus 2 years' experience working with young people aged 6-15

Or



NVQ Level 3 in a care related subject plus 3 years' experience working with young people aged 6-15

Successful applicants must, prior to commencing employment, complete registration with NISCC.

Ability to work flexible hours as weekend work and sleeping in duties is a requirement of the post.

Expectation of successful completion of full Therapeutic Crisis Training (TCI) within 6 months of appointment. Must maintain TCI accreditation throughout employment with Tearmann Care.

Completion of Sensory Attachment intervention training when offered

CAPA online training must be completed prior to commencement

Knowledge/Skills



An understanding of the needs of young people who live in residential care.

Knowledge of impact of trauma on presenting behaviors of young people and ways to respond appropriately in crisis situations.

Knowledge of neuro sequential models of therapeutics and Sensory attachment Intervention

An understanding of working as a member of a team.

Ability to risk assess situations and make decisions.

Demonstrate an ability to plan and use outside and inside spaces to allow for playful/regulating activities

Experience of working within a residential childcare setting

Current driving license and access to a car
