Job Description

The post is for a 6 month fixed term contract (Aug 25 - Jan 26) and a fantastic opportunity for those desiring experience in respiratory medicine at a large modern tertiary respiratory centre. It is intended that this post could be tailored to meet training needs, including opportunities for trainees to become involved in respiratory research & procedural skills.
Main duties of the job
The post would be suitable for individuals who have completed at least 3 year experience in medical specialties by the intended start date. There will be a commitment to a full shift respiratory HST on call rota, fully supported by consultant daily ward rounds.
The service is supported by a number of foundation doctors, IMT 1-2 doctors, StRs as well as a Physician Associate & Specialist Nurses. This will allow flexibility to tailor training to requirements, including clinics, as well as opportunities to develop pleural & bronchoscopy skills.
It is intended that the successful applicant would be involved in audit & quality improvement projects, including the chance to collaborate with researchers to present at national meetings & publish work.
We will ensure that the post receive dedicated clinical supervision with an experienced named supervisor, portfolio review, study leave & teaching programmes with evidence to count towards future training.

Job description
Job responsibilities
This post will provide the opportunity for successful candidates to work in the tertiary Respiratory Centre. It is intended that this post could be tailored to meet training needs, including opportunities for trainees to become involved in procedural skills.
This appointment will be based at the Department of Respiratory Medicine, St James's University Hospital, Leeds, one of the largest teaching hospital Trusts in the UK, serving a population of over 3 million. The department delivers specialist respiratory services including severe asthma, bronchiectasis, interstitial lung disease, tuberculosis, COPD, and PCD. The lung cancer service is one of the largest in the UK and is home to the Yorkshire Lung Screening Trial. We offer bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound, thoracoscopy and long-term pleural drainage. There is a well-established programme in collaboration with radiology to provide pleural ultrasound certification.
The department consists of 3 inpatient wards and a 12 bed respiratory care unit offering non-invasive ventilation. There is a separate ward for the care of people with cystic fibrosis.
The department has close links with the University of Leeds and supports delivery of a number of aspects of the under-graduate MB ChB course with a number of opportunities to engage within undergraduate teaching.

Clinical Experience and Career Progression
Essential

  • 24 months experience after full GMC registration or equivalent
  • Evidence of achievement of CT competencies in medicine
  • At least 3 years experience in medical specialties
  • Evidence that career progression is consistent with personal circumstances
Qualifications
Essential
  • MBBS or equivalent Qualification
  • GMC registration at intended start date
  • Advance life support Certification from resuscitation Council UK or equivalent

  • Ability to show leadership, make decisions, organise & motivate others
  • Capacity to manage/prioritise time & information effectively

  • Is up to date & fit to practise safely & is aware of own training needs
  • Undertaken undergraduate medical training in English or achieved the minimum score of 7 in IELTS or achieved minimum Grade B in OET

  • Ability to apply sound clinical knowledge & judgement to problems
  • Recognition of, & ability to undertake the initial management of an acutely ill patient
  • Demonstrates knowledge of evidence informed practice
  • Demonstrates understanding of research, including awareness of ethical issues
  • Demonstrates understanding of basic principles of audit, clinical risk management, patient safety & clinical quality improvement initiatives
