We are proud to be Music School of the Year 2025 and Highly Commended at the Surrey Business Awards.
Our purpose is simple: we make musicians and communities. We believe music has the power to build confidence, connection, and courage--and that the right mentor can change a young person's life.
The Role
We are looking for Ukulele Mentors who care more about people than perfection.
At The Music Works, personality comes first. While musical competence matters, we believe the best mentors are those who can connect, encourage, and inspire. Some of our most impactful team members are not the most technically accomplished musicians--but they are exceptional at building confidence and unlocking potential.
You will be based in local schools (day time lessons) and this role is about helping students feel safe, seen, and brave enough to perform. You will mentor students through engaging 1-to-1 and small group lessons, with view to supporting them to perform multiple times per year. Whether you prefer daytime work in partner schools, evening sessions in our centres, or a mix of both, we can build a schedule that suits you.
Consistent Freelance Work
We know freelancers value certainty. We work with you to agree on consistent teaching blocks, allowing you to plan your gigging and personal life around your teaching commitments.
As our school grows, we prioritise our existing mentor network for new student portfolios, giving you first refusal on additional work.
What matters most to us:
You enjoy working with young children:
Often our ukulele students are 5 to 7 years old, so you must be able to have fun and manage the classroom!
You are a people-person:
You build trust easily and create an environment where students and team members feel encouraged and cared for.
You value growth over perfection:
You understand that confidence, enjoyment, and progress matter more than flawless playing.
You take care of your community:
You look after everyone around you--whether that is students, parents, fellow mentors, or our admin team. You treat every interaction as an opportunity to build trust and make someone's experience great.
You lead with empathy:
You adapt your approach to suit each child.
You inspire through example:
You encourage students to share their music and support them in taking their first steps onto the stage.
You are reliable and committed:
Our students thrive on consistency. We need mentors who take ownership of their responsibilities and show up for their community week in, week out.
