Job Description

As a Vehicle Technician with The Tank Museum, you will be part of a highly skilled team supporting the maintenance and repair of the various wheeled and tracked vehicles currently housed in the museum.



This key role supports the Workshop Team Leaders and Workshop Manager in the operation of the workshop facility and care of the collection, ensuring that The Tank Museum establishes itself as a centre of excellence in the maintenance, repair and restoration of historic armoured vehicles. Responsible for carrying out regular inspections on both tracked and wheeled vehicles, the post holder will also carry out fault diagnosis, service and repairs of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems to required standards to ensure safe operation of the vehicles for the Museum's events and activities. This work will include completing paperwork such as job card write ups, service report sheets and using the Museum's in-house recording systems.

Key Accountabilities:




Test vehicles and diagnose faults.


Recognise and report vehicle/component defects or symptoms of impending failure.


Service, adjust and repair vehicles/components.


Overhaul vehicle systems and complete vehicles to ensure safe sustainable vehicle operation.


Identify parts that need to be ordered.


Carry out work to the required standard and specification as detailed on the job card in accordance with the museums policies, current regulations and technical publications.


Maintain the requirements of COSHH, Health & Safety and other statutory regulations. Ensure a good standard of housekeeping, cleanliness and safety in the work area is maintained at all times.


Ensure personal tools and workshop equipment is maintained in good serviceable order and report any faults to the department Team Leader.


Inform the department team leader of any issues which directly affect the repair process and any emerging work.


Operate vehicles for events and activities, including Rides Vehicles and represent The Tank Museum at external events.


Provide mentoring and training to workshop apprentices and volunteers.

What you'll bring:



NVQ Level 3 in light/heavy motor vehicle or Plant Maintenance is essential, along with a full valid UK driving license. Forklift, LGV and tracked vehicle license is desirable, along with IOSH qualification Health & Safety qualifications relevant to a workshop environment is necessary Demonstrable experience in: Repairing and maintaining vehicles and related systems Good understanding of and an interest in the operation and maintenance in historic vehicles Using equipment and machinery in a workshop environment Desirable experience of working on tracked vehicles, museums and heritage and working with volunteers and apprentices Full understanding of complex vehicle systems Knowledge of military vehicle operation by the MOD is desirable
