Veterinary Diagnostic Scientist



Austin Davis Biologics Ltd (ADB) is a science-based family business, founded in 2009. It is a small, fast-moving company that delivers scientific innovations and technology focussed on equine health and parasite diagnostics. EquiSal Tapeworm, the saliva test to diagnose tapeworm infections in horses, was the first diagnostic service to reach the market in 2014 followed by a blood test for tapeworm. A blood test for equine cyathostomins (redworms) was commercialised in 2019 and other equine health products are in development.

ADB's vision is to bring high quality, rigorous scientific research, and development to horse health, by providing accurate diagnostic tools for SQPs, veterinary practices, diagnostic laboratories, and horse owners at affordable prices.

This is an exciting opportunity for a diagnostic scientist to join our team. The role is predominantly lab-based, performing various ELISA-based diagnostic assays together with associated activities as part of our small, dedicated team of scientists. The position will suit a candidate with a proven laboratory background.

Key tasks:



EquiSal Tapeworm saliva test and small redworm blood testing services:



As part of the team conducting the ELISA-based testing services, you will undertake Sample processing and entering into laboratory systems Operation of liquid handling robots Performing ELISA testing of horse blood and saliva samples Sensitisation of ELISA plates for use Quality control analysis and authorisation of results Quality control of all ELISA reagent batches Associated documentation and accurate recording on batch records

Undertaking R&D projects as required (experience dependent)



Additional laboratory tasks:



Undertaking all laboratory procedures and maintenance of laboratory equipment in line with Standard operating Procedures (SOPS) Participate fully in general housekeeping of the laboratory stock checks, orders, and maintaining a clean, tidy and safe working environment.

Relevant experience:



You must



Have a minimum of 12 months experience in a relevant laboratory environment. Be technically competent in plate based methodologies (ELISA) and instrumentation. Experience of liquid handling robot operation and programming would be advantageous. Ideally have experience in a diagnostic laboratory and in development of diagnostic tests. Have a methodical approach to work and strong attention to detail. Have a high degree of manual dexterity. Be capable of multitasking and conducting multiple experiments/assays simultaneously. Be self-motivated, hardworking, be able to work under pressure to deliver success. Have excellent organisational and planning skills and a flexible approach to changing priorities. Display good teamwork ability but be able to work independently. Display drive and motivation to improve performance. Possess excellent oral and written communication skills and be able to keep accurate records. Have the ability to follow written and verbal instructions efficiently. Be able to demonstrate active involvement in solving problems / trouble shooting. Have practical IT experience, in particular Microsoft packages such as Excel and Word as well as electronic data handling experience. Comply with policies for the safe, secure, and confidential processing and storage of patient / client data and other laboratory information.

Desired qualifications:



At least 5 GCSEs grade C (grade 4) and above with at least one GCSE science subject

BSc (or equivalent) or higher in a relevant scientific subject (preferred but not essential). Experience is more important than qualifications.

Hours of Work:



The hours of work will be 37.5 hours per week.

Salary:



Annual salary will be between 30,000 - 45,000 dependent on the successful candidate's skills and previous experience.
